Broken Big Toe

I broke my big toe last week during my first week of half marathon training (thankfully the race isn't til May 2014).

I've ready accounts of people just taping it up and continuing to run, but given the fact that a) that hurts a lot, and b) it puts me at the risk of extending healing time, getting arthritis in a place that will cause ongoing pain forever when I run, and c) the big toe is pretty important for balance I'm wondering how long people usually wait before running again?

From what I've read if I take it easy and give it time to heal it should take 4-6 weeks. That's a bummer of a long time to go without running. Has anybody tried getting back out there after 2 or 3 weeks?

Basically I'm looking for that sweet spot between healing properly and not taking too much time off running (I'm going nuts and it's only been a week).

I know some people who have been injured but were able to maintain some of their fitness with cross-training (eliptical, stationary bike, etc..) Hope it heals quickly for you!

^^ Keith's advice is so good. Try an eliptical or a stationary bike for a couple of months. DO NOT compromise your healing. You might be able to get away with it. But, you might not. Three months from now, you won't even remember whether you ran or not -- and if you get a non-union or something like that, you won't be running for MANY months.

Recently broke (I think) a middle toe. Now middle is not big for sure. I ended up with several days off and then it was annoying to run but not painful. Annoying being key I think. I iced after every run snd wore a sandal on that foot (day to day nit running) fir maybe a month. Still some soreness 7 weeks later but barely notice it.
