Create a memorial race or not?

I have been deeply saddened by the news of a friend's 20 year old daughter who has passed away unexpectedly. Her family are all runners and one of her passions was running especially barefoot running. She was a local state running champion, attending college and a member of the cross country team and just a fun spirit. A running friend and I have discussed the idea of organizing a memorial race for her. I am trying to put myself in the position of the family to think if this were my daughter, would I want something like this established.

Please share any thoughts you may have around this from any perspective - racer, family member, organizer. Thanks.

  • I think this is a great idea personally, but I dont know the family or what they would want. The only way to find this out is to talk to them about it.
I think it would be nice too if the run was in support of / raised awareness of something related to her cause of death, if this is appropriate (e.g. a specific disease, drinking and driving, suicide, or whatever it may be).

First, I would make absolutely sure this is something the family would want. I helped set up a fallen police officer 5K, and we waited until the 1-year anniversary of their deaths to have the memorial 5K. We cleared it with the families and the PD. This was a list from my local runners club that helped us set it up:

    8 weeks out:
Set date and time (check local race calendars for conflicts)
Contact runner clubs/shops to list on the calendar
    Event Insurance: (RRCA offers it)
Figure out course/ map route and get any permits for building, bike path or trail use. Contact the 5-0 if you are crossing any roads.
    Reserve clock/timing stuff, if needed

    4-6 weeks out:
Hit up ponsors for door prizes
    Flyers out and promotion
    Get swag
    Solicit volunteer sign ups

    2 weeks out:
    Volunteers and supplies
    Bathrooms?
    Mile Markers/course markings
    Awards for overall places
Registration: money collection, registration forms, swag handout
    Refreshments
Race administration: announcer, timers, traffic control, turnaround

Great information. We haven't approached the family at all and will certainly wait for some time, but this will help our discussions if and when we get there. Thanks.
  • it's a lovely and thoughtful idea, let us know what the family think when the time comes - sorry for everyone's loss, what a terrible shock for you all
