How often do you replace your shoes?

The recent thread on rotating shoes got me wondering how often I should replace my running shoes? I read on runnnersworld.com that they should be replaced after 300-500 miles. Is this what people do in practice? If I get up my base mileage up to a regular 25 mpw (my goal), this would mean buying new ones every 3-5 mos! Eeep, thats hard on a student budget, but I'm definitely willing to if this is correct.
For reference, I've been running on the same pair since March (about 500 miles as my mpw were low over the summer)

I'm on a 3 month plan, but I wait until I "feel" when I need to replace. When my last pair started wearing down, I got pain in my Achilles around 350mi and it magically went away when I replaced them at 400mi. But the standard rule of thumb is 300-500 miles. Yeah, it can get expensive, but it's like tires for your car.0

Thanks for the feedback! I went out this afternoon and bought a new pair (same model as my old ones bc they worked well for me) . It was so hard not to buy more gear once I was in the running store!0

College budgets leave little room for expensive running shoes. Hopefully Santa brings me a pair.0
