Did you know that adding strength training to your work out will increase your at rest metabolism? Strength training will help you gain lean muscle you and will continue to burn more calories all day long. Let's bust the myth-as women we do not have it in our hormones to bulk up because we have anywhere from 10-30 times less of the hormones that men have that causes THEM to bulk up! Additionally, lifting weights will have benefits of reducing the risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes and injury from your activities. Plus, you will find that your performance improves when you do your cardio because you are stronger. Coupled with your cardio you should see results faster due to building that lean muscle. If you are a beginner, I recommend strength training 3x's per week. Try to work a different muscle group each time you strength train with light weights (appx 5 lbs. for free weights-if using machines, you will need to find your own weight limit that works for you).
When I first started strength training I would only use 7lb free weights. When I found out that I couldn't bulk up, I increased to 10lb free weights. Over time, I increased to the 15lb free weights and just broke my personal barrier on Friday to using 20lb free weights. For those of you who have seen me in person, you know that my arms are NOT bulky!
So don't be afraid to pick up those weights and watch your results come faster! Happy Sunday!
