Do you just need a new pair, or you're wanting to change to something totally different than what you've been running in?

What are you running in now?

What I wear depends on the distance and speed I'm intending. Saucony Cortana (8mm drop, not quite minimalist) for normal training/easy runs; Saucony Kinvara (4mm drop minimals) for short races (5k/10k) and treadmill work; Asics Gel Noosa Tri for long distance racing (comfort and lightweight).

Should have been more specific lol :-D I'm a fairly new runner and I've just been running in my all purpose cheap joggers that I'v picked up from big.w. I'm running my first 6k on the 27th andnow that I know running is something I really want to stick with I want a pair of shoes designed for running/jogging.

    Got it--that's a whole different story! :)
    1) Do you have a specialty running store near you? If so, go see them! They will analyze your feet for arch type, pressure distribution, etc. and observe your running form on the treadmill, then give you a good recommendation for a shoe type/style that will be best for you. Make sure you tell them if there are any specific aches/pains you feel during or after running (i.e. hips, knees, arch of the foot, etc).

    2) Don't skimp on the shoes. It will be tempting to get something cheap, because good running shoes can get expensive--but you will risk injury. There are plenty of excellent sites to get good shoes for good prices (I use National Running Center, and watch for sales on Running Warehouse and 6pm websites). Also the runners' expo events for big races typically have great shoes for up to half off.

    3) If you don't have access to a specialty running store, go to the Runner's World website and use their Shoe Finder. make sure you know details about your arch type and how heavily you want to train. It will give you some good recommendations.

Enjoy! Running has been the best thing I've ever done for myself.

Sometimes finding a good running shoe for you can be a bit of trial and error, even with the help of a professional. One thing to keep in mind that often goes unmentioned with this question...when you do purchase a pair of running shoes that you like, make sure to wear them ONLY for running, not everyday use. They will wear differently based on running vs. walking and could eventually even lead to injury.

Go get fitted! That is the most important part to running, you need to know what kind of runners you are (i.e. neutral, over pronator, under pronator, how you land, where you push off from). This makes a big difference with the type of shoes you purchase. Plus, you need to try them on and run in them. Most stores have a treadmill that you can run on with the shoes on to get a better feel. They should offer you several different types to try on based on your gait analysis and then you'll be able to truly pick out the ones that best fit your feet/stride.

    Good luck!

    <---btw .. Brooks Ghost 6 girl here!
  • Def go get fitted! I'm Asics GT2000's and I love them. Before that I had Keyanos I didn't love but are also a great shoe. Trial and Error!
