I haven't done starting strength, but I used to do stronglifts 5x5 and I understand they are pretty similar. The idea is increasing the weight each workout, so workout A was squat 5x5 for 45 lbs, bench 5x5 at 45 lbs, and rows 5x5 at 45 lbs. Then workout B was squat 5x5 at 50 lbs, OHP 5x5 at 45 lbs, and dead lift 1x5 at 95 lbs. Back to workout A with squat at 55 lbs, bench at 50 lbs, and rows at 50 lbs. Back to B with squat at 60 lbs, OHP at 50 lbs, and dead at 105 (only lift that increases by 10 lbs). It's A, B, A one week then B, A, B the next...does that make sense? As I said, that's Stronglifts, so it may be a little different, but essentially it's the same idea.

I haven't done the program and maybe someone here has to help; but honestly it would be best to sit down and read the entire book with notes and not skim it as it would probably help and benefit you in your questions. If you are brand new to lifting, find someone who can help you with form as well.

I followed the SS program when I began lifting. The book and program are excellent. Read it all the way through and follow it. Don't modify it until you've been lifting for at least a few months. The only thing I'd caution you on, is maintaining good form all the time. There is such an emphasis on increasing your weights lifted every week, but don't sacrifice form to do it. That became a struggle for me eventually which led me to add in some accessory work.

QFT. I responded about SS on the thread. Fractional plates help, but sometimes you just can't go up in weight from one workout to the next. I had to reboot and re-read a couple of times before I realized that "+5 pounds a workout" was the prescription for male teenage athletes. If you can't do it at the increased weight with solid form, don't increase the weight.
