Hi, ya'll! I am new to this group as well as juicing! Would love to have some juicing buddies so please add me if you would like! Also, a question: When juicing kale do you cut the leafy stuff of the stem or throw the whole thing (stem and leaves) into the juicer? Never had kale before and anxious to try it!

    Hi,

As for kale... I hated the stuff. I found that it took a crap-load of kale to make a small amount of juice... ( I stuffed the whole plant in ) and that small amount of juice completely wrecked the taste of my juice. I gave up on kale. I've read others use lemon, or umm... some spice, can't remember off the top of my head... something to mask the rotten taste of the kale. I figured, I was more likely to stick with juicing, if I actually LIKED the taste. I never mixed fruits with vegetables, either... I liked, pure, grapefruit, or apple or orange juice... and I made almost exclusively, red pepper, tomato, carrot and celery juice, just because I liked it.

    But, that's just me.

    * Edited * I think it's ginger that people use to mask bad tasting vegetables in their juice. Ginger, and or lemon.

Kale is loaded with goodness. Very little goes a long way. Just use one large leaf, stem and all, along with other vegetables and fruits when making your juice. Here's my recipe:

    2 apples
3 handfuls of salad mix (romaine/spinach/other)
    1 large kale leaf
    1 large carrot

Makes about 16 oz of juice. 180 calories. I save the lemon for my water and tea. Don't really like it in my juice.

I do have to admit, I probably gave up no it too easily. :blushing:

I don't know about that. If something tastes gross to me, I just don't eat it. So you're probably right.

Haven't eaten much kale in salads, but I suspect it tastes alright raw. But, the juice... just didn't like it. Thing is, I read how people mask the flavors they don't like with ginger, lemon, etc.... I guess I never got that advanced.....

Yeah, I know where you're coming from. I can't stand ginger in my juices and people give me grief for that. It just destroys the taste for me. But I like it in other things (like tea). So I don't think that leaving kale out of your juices is a bad thing if it helps you to drink the juices you make.

You'll have to share some of your recipes with me then!! LOL. I'm hoping that after my reboot I can rediscover the joys of kale. I put in 4 raised bed gardens in my yard and am hoping to grow some this summer. It's -3 degrees below zero here today, and summer seems like it's still years away. :grumble:
