Spike Question

Recently I purchased my first pair of middle distance racing spikes. They fit just fine and I would like to wear them for my one mile race next week (held on an indoor 200m rubberized track). I ran once with them outside to make sure they fit but not at my one mile racing speed or on a similar surface.

My concern is that race day itself will be my first chance to test out the rubberized track with the spikes (last year in the same race I wore my Vibram Bikila shoes). I will be able to warm up beforehand with the spikes on race day but not before.

The only other track I have access to right now is outside, not made of the same surface and weather is a concern.

Am I making a mistake using my spikes for the first time on race day? My primary goal is setting a new PR.

Thanks!

Jeez, I just read something about spikes, I'll try and remember where. That said do u feel u could PR without them? If so I'd go without. But if you think you need them then give them a try. My guess is that mental confidence will mean a lot

I think that running with spikes will make a difference. You usually run with minimalist shoes, so weight isn't as much of a question as traction. Make sure you bring your spikes and an alternative on race day. Then, try out the spikes. If you feel comfortable in them (i.e. no weird ankle issues), then go for it!

Thanks! I will bring two pairs of shoes to be safe.

My main reason for wanting the spikes is the 200m track itself. I do 99% of my track work on a 400m track so I feel like spikes may help me with traction on the turns.

I am not sure how much they will help but a few seconds could determine whether or not I PR:)
