What are you guys using to measure your calorie burns? Not to be a debbie downer, but some of the numbers I see posted, along with the correlating exercise, seems a bit, ok, a lot off base

HRM for me , then when i swin a water HRM that tracks lap times - i'm a gadget nut!

by all means let me know who's exercise you are challenging and I'd be happy to provide the evidence :0) we dont cheat on this team and I've double checked all the results .

My calorie burns are from Garmin HRM, also I compare it with the estimated calories burnt from the machine and also the calories that MFP suggests. As the latter is most of the time way over the mark, I go by my HRM. Photographic evidence can be provided....

A Beat60 BT Heart Rate Monitor and Endomondo running on an old iPhone 4S for my morning bootcamp or Sunday ride or a HRM and the Spin Cycle at the gym.

I just have a hard time believing that almost everybody is burning 1400 cals a day. The equivalent of running 14 (10 minute) miles. I mentiones this earlier when seeing past logs when everybody burnes an average of 1800 cals, or 18 miles. Unless you are training for a marathon (even then its extreme), I dont see how those kind of numbers are possible.

Maybe with a HRM, and being extremely out of shape, those numbers are possible. But using a HRM is not an accurate representation of calories burned. But oxygen used.

For running I use garmin to measure distance transferred into runtastic which puts the exercise into mfp and the cals are those given by mfp
This seems a little high to me so for walkibg I use runtastic pedometer with a shortened step ( so I walk further than I log) I only turn this on when I am going for an extended walk. Walking around office home and shops is not counted etc.
I use runtastic bike to log my bike. This again is an under estimatr. My route involves stopping and starting whereas runtastic just goes off distance. If I use a hr to cal converter that figure is 25% higher. This again offsets the slightly high run note as well my fine tuning is for me. I run a 1000 cal a day deficit and ive tweaked like this to make sure that my average out is correct :)

Out of curiosity, if you dont mind me asking, when you run 1000 cal deficit, how many miles is that?

i ask because on average, you would have to run 10 (10 minute miles) to achieve that. Im wondering how many miles it would be if you just went by a heart rate monitor.

I'm also a gadget nut, most on HRM. I don't know how we resolve this? Yes HRM is an estimate, but as it is based on oxygen transported then surely it is a better one than most. Short of us all getting access to lab equipment for direct or indirect calorimetery I don't think we have a better option. 14 x 10 minute miles is 2h20m of workout time, which looks pretty much what a lot of folk are doing anyway, so it passes that sense check..... Personally I'm sitting at 1100 cal so far today, based on 2 x 55min workouts, so 110 mins, and I have another planned after work tonight.

I will leave the technical stuff for other so can only go by my own experience. My HRM calculates calories burnt from my heart rate, it knows my height, my weight and my age. I have used this particular HRM for marathon training and for running the marathon itself. I have noticed a huge decrease in calories burnt from when I started cycling, which would probably be 1,200 cals which now for the same distance would be now about 800-900 calories burnt. The difference being that I'm now fitter and using less effort.
I don't think my numbers are too far out, my heart rate is averaging 150bpm when I'm running, less for when I'm cycling.

I'm feeling in a good mood so i'll say this my HRM is based on VO2 Max which does measure calories through Oxygen expenditure, i also know that when i spin for example my HR doesn't drop below 70% max throughout the entire class bar the warmup so I know mine to be as fairly accurate as i'm gonna get.

I also note that if you look through the diaries of most of the team GB including myself you'll see an average daily burn coming around the 1000 mark, this is usual training for us. when we compete ( this is the 3rd time ) we all do extra and the rules clearly stated at the start that you'd be expected to be averaging 1000 burns a day comfortably because if not dont bother competing because you'd get slaughtered.

I appreciate this might be new to you but this is the 3 time round for most of us and there is no ****ing cheating on my team because it happened last time with the yanks and we had to actually define exercise because people were putting cooking food as burning calories.

Now my workout will be double spin again tonight if I can get into the second class ( because of new ****ing members ) and weights followed by a swim where i'll be doing butterfly for the most part ( i was a professional swimmer in my youth ) so again not blowing up calorie burns , its just what i burn.

I'm disappointed that on day 1 we are already getting challenged , all i can say is you folks were warned the level of work that would be required. It is a competition afterall!

and its supposed to be fun!!!! so lets have fun!! its only day 1 i want to keep it friendly!

Calm down. I am not accusing anybody of cheating. I'm saying that using HRM to track calorie burn is inaccurate. Since if an extremely unfit person (not calling anybody here that, just an example) tried to run a 10 minute mile, they would be at 90% max heart rate. While an extremely fit person can do that at say...50-60% max heart rate. The HRM will give extremely different calorie burn totals, but in the end, its still 100 cals burned on average (depending on weight).

I don't have a HRM, and can't get one. Since I SUCK at cardio, I'm sure my 2 mile run yesterday would've registered extreme calories burned, instead of MFP's 178 number, which is more accurate. My lack of cardiovascular efficiency doesn't mean I burn more calories than anybody else, it just means I will be sucking more wind. So with that being said, I should probably withdraw from the competition, so somebody with a HRM can replace me.

Im guessing for 1000 cals I would run about 10 or 11Km. My weight is around 205 at the moment. I've checked with various on-line calculators and the dreadmill at my gym and MFP is a little on the high side but reasonably close to other ways of calculating - Runtastic (distance measurement + weight ) usually is +/- 10% of MFP i (I believe similar distance measurement + weight) f I run 5.5 miles as is my Garmin 410 (using weight and HR). I don't think the MFP numbers translate to running machines but to undulating roads they do see to all be in the same ball park. I'm, guessing calories burned while running is pretty much in a linear relationship to weight so when I drop another 35 lb I would be looking more at 1000-1200 cals per 10 miles which is similar to yourwself. Just to be clear and upfront though,Yesterday I ran about 5.5 miles, walked between 6 and 7 miles (didn't book all of this) and road my bike (at an average speed of 14.5 miles per hr with multiple stops) for 6.3 miles :-)

How heavy are you if you don't mind me asking. 174 for 2 miles seems very low. The figures I see are that for healthy weighted mid-percentile type people the calorie burn is 100+. per mile Has MFP done a flip on you for some reason ?

I doubt you need to withdraw....is this not a friendly competition that benefits all of us, regardless of who wins? I use an HRM....sorry but it's the best I can do for this competition. I have no issues with others estimating their burns using calculators on the web or MFP numbers.

    wt 117 lb - what a fantastic weight :-)

This is the big difference between us though. I weight in at 205 so it will take me a lot more energy to move my fat *kitten* the same distance as it would take you to move your body. This seems to give me an advantage but because I burn so much energy means that the duration of what I can do is a lot less.

Have a look at this link

    http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/weight-loss/how-many-calories-do-you-burn/259.html

As L-L though the purpose of this (for me at least) is to challenge me to get my *kitten* moving as much as it can for a week. In a weeks time we will all cheer and take the piss out of each other for a day and then get back to life ... but then 2 weeks or a month later that will be forgotten and what will be left will be leaner fitter people because of it. No matter which side "wins" or "loses" we will all benefit :-)

    Totally agree!!! :)
  • As L-L though the purpose of this (for me at least) is to challenge me to get my *kitten* moving as much as it can for a week. In a weeks time we will all cheer and take the piss out of each other for a day and then get back to life ... but then 2 weeks or a month later that will be forgotten and what will be left will be leaner fitter people because of it. No matter which side "wins" or "loses" we will all benefit :-)

i also agree. amazing job from both teams! guys let's have fun and burn, burn.. burn! :))

I weigh in at 291 or so right now. So for the distance I go and the speed at which I get there my numbers are going to be very high compared to somone at 200lbs much less 120 or less.

The purpose of the whole deal is to push each other to do more. That is why you will see me congratuling members of either team that try thier best. There is no cash prize or even cookies as far as I'm aware. The only real benifit you will see are the improvements you make in yourself.
