Welcome to ChapLynne’s Daily Encouragement and Bible Study. Everything here is designed to spark your imagination and embolden the meditation of the Scriptures—day and night—like King David spoke of in Psalm 1.

This Fourth Day after Epiphany focuses on the prophecies of the Old Testament in Psalm 29, Acts 9 and I Samuel 3, which address the Voice of the Lord and God’s call to servants. In Psalm 29, we praise God for the power and the glory of the Voice of God, which calls down thunder and rain. With a word, he controls the Cedars of Lebanon, stops the floods and divides the flames (as in Shadrack Meshach and Abednego in the furnace).

In Acts 9 and I Samuel 3, both are about the human interaction responding to the Voice of God. Both Samuel and Saul (later, called Paul) heard a true voice speaking, interrupting their lives. For Samuel, as a child, wanting to please his boss, Eli, jumps out of bed and runs to his elder. Eli, at first, discounts Samuel’s quest, but then he recognizes that the youthful Samuel is hearing God’s Voice; even though Eli is the elder priest. God uses the unexpected characters to convey his message. A child versus an elder priest. Go figure. In the case of Saul: he was the murderer of Christians, the least of all saints, as he was later to refer to himself. God chose a murderer to carry his good news and become the spokesperson (Paul wrote most of the epistles, and hence more books of the Bible than others) of the gospel. The lessons deal with God’s voice. Speaking to earth. To the weather. To the child. To the murderer. And in every situation, transforming their life for the better.

God can use anyone. Anywhere. To accomplish anything. Listen for the voice of the Lord.

How? Read the Scriptures and listen to what jumps out at you. Any Voice from God must not disagree with the Scriptures as we know…and more importantly, the unity of the Scriptures. Jesus speaks of the most important commandment as being to love God with all our hearts, and the second, to love our neighbors as ourselves. Everything in the Scriptures falls under those two umbrellas.

The Voice of God, speaking internally in our hearts, through our consciences, the readings, the counsel of the wise around us and spiritually insightful. If you read and study the Scriptures, the voice will be in your head, too.

1 Samuel 3:1-9
King James Version (KJV)

3 And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
2 And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;
3 And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;
4 That the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.

5 And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
6 And the Lord called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed unto him.
8 And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child.

9 Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

Prayer of Encouragement

Dear God, the Psalmist offered praises to you for the way your Voice commands the world—from the Cedars to the thunder to fire. There are limitless areas we can praise you Lord. Instead, we often forget to praise you. Forgive us and empower us to see you in all our lives. More important, help us to hear your voice in our own lives that we might be as Samuel and Saul and respond to your call. In Jesus name, Amen.

I hope you found a chance to encounter your Creator and experience the Love of God and the joy of Christ in this Epiphany season.
This Fourth Day after Epiphany of the Lord calls our own response to God into the foreground. Psalm 29 is a praise song for what God is capable of—the power of his Voice—and how we must praise him for his control over all our lives. In both I Samuel 3 and Acts 9, two key figures in Judeo-Christian history are called to ministry. Called to service of the Lord. “Here am I, Lord” should be our response, just as Eli instructed young Samuel to answer God, when he called him again.

What are we to do? We can open our hearts and minds that we can be receptive to the leading of God and hear God’s voice clearly through the Scriptures and the spiritual counsel of those, like Eli the priest, who recognize the call of God when other’s hear it.

May you go from this place encouraged and inspired to be all that God wants you to be.

    Quiet. I have to be settled, serene and aware to hear Gods messages. He always has my answer right in his word. No matter how many times i try to do it my way, after much turmoil and hurt i always know that bits, are not the answer. God clearly tries to guide me. I keep praying God let me get out of my own way. Yes God gives me small nudges,but than when needed he shouts. A women should never doubt her female intuition, it is a gift from God. The Holy Spirit is within to assist. Blessed Trinity.

    Sometimes, there is so much noise going in in our heads that we don't hear God's voice. I pray that The Lord would teach me to hear His voice. And to be able to discern the meanings of His voice to me. I feel like God is sending me a message all the time; and I just have to believe and accept it. Because that human, secular side wants to say, Oh, God is not talking to you! He has way more important people to talk to!! Lord, bless us all here to perceive and receive the sound of Your voice!
