Hello Everyone,
My name is Alysia , I am 30 years old diagnosed with PCOS when i was 24 . I did at one point weigh over 300lbs. During going through some hard times i would starve myself and not eat properly with everything else i had going on in my life , at that time. At the beginning of 2013 i ended up having a partial bowel obstruction which caused me not being able to eat, i was down to 180. Now , with some other things that are going on in my life i have been depressed alot lately eating more cause of being laid off and i ended up gaining weight and going back to 244lbs. What doesnt help is , my doctor who was treated me moved to New York and i have a new doctor who wont up my Metformin back to 2000mg from 500mg because of me not being as active as when i was working which made me gain weight back also. I was wondering if you guys could tell me any solutions as too over the counter health products that might possibly help or the best way to approach this since my doctors are not doing what i am asking them too do . Currently dont have health insurance because of being laid off. I go back to work this month but i just feel it is a never ending losing battle . And, what makes it worse it when you love someone who you want to be with but he wont be with you because you are heavy . But , accepts everything else like my hair loss , and facial hair .

Welcome to the group, and very sorry that you are struggling.

You can try adding a chromium based supplement (I take something called Glucoplex) - this is supposed to work a bit like metformin so may allow you to get away with taking a lower dosage of met than you might otherwise need. That being said, 500 to 2000 is a big difference. Maybe see if your doc will let you go up a little bit? To 1000 or 1500... 500 is really quite low.

As far as this guy goes.. I always subscribe to the theory that if he doesn't love you at your worst, he doesn't deserve you at your best. Losing weight doesn't change WHO you are. I sincerely hope that you are very successful in your goal to lose weight and be healthier (for you!), and that you start to see there are other, better men out there that will love you regardless of what you look like.
(my husband met me, fell in love with me, and married me at my heaviest, and still loves me now at the lowest I've ever been in my adult life... the good ones ARE out there!)

What are your fasting insulin levels?

Normally they do a fasting insulin test to see what your levels are, if they are above normal then you need more metformin, if they're normal then its a harder fight to up the metformin. It doesn't really have a lot to do with your weight, as if your insulin levels are high then you will have an extremely hard time losing weight without metformin or some other type of drug.

maybe ask to get a fasting insulin level? if you don't have numbers than you and the doctor are just guessing and doctors do better with hard and fast numbers than guesses.
