I find I get blisters under my callouses, then thet rip open. Is there a way to prevent this? Would it be better use a pumice stone and file them?

Yes You're supposed to regularly file them down.0

I soooo feel your pain!!
I found a pumice stone is too aggressive and a good old nail file works a treat. File them down to there's no edges or sharp bits to catch on bars etc, but don't file them all away otherwise you'll lose the callouses you've worked so hard to get :P
Also, don't use chalk!! Chalk makes it easier to grip but also increases friction. I used to use chalk especially for T2Bs and kipping chin ups but found I was just getting blisters on top of blisters, and once I stopped using it my hands got a whole lot better. Can't hold on quite as long but it will work your grip strength more and keep your hands from shredding too much0 -

Now that you mention it, I've only gotten the blisters under the callouses when I've used chalk.0 -
Mine are not that big so I use an emery board, but same idea. Smooth them out so they don't catch on anything. That is probably what is causing the blisters/tears.0

I use a callus shaver since mine have a tendency to go a while before I remember to file them down. So I just shave them off and then file the rough edges (if any) down with a pumice stone or emery board. I still use chalk on everything though because I like using it. Haven't ripped in over a year and a half either. I like having my cake and eating it too.0

I actually use my regular old razor that I used to shave my legs! In the shower I'll just hit my hands with it after the skin gets nice and soft, keeps my hands looking nice. Crossfit doesn't have to be the Ugly Hands Sport! After I get out of the shower I also hit it with a heavy grit nail file just to smooth it all out.0
