The story of the coach getting injured is bad enough. OP is being a douche using that accident as a way to mock Crossfit. I'm just all out of give-a-f[/i]uck today so I'm not getting into it with him. Just figured I'd share with y'all and get your opinions on both the story and the thread.

I had heard about that accident on Christmas' FB page and just now saw the clip. Looks like something just snapped! Damn!

Wow that is horrible. Of all the injuries I'd think could happen during a snatch, I don't think this would have come to mind...
I haven't read the whole thread but unfortunately something like this is going to open a can of worms for anyone that has even the slightest beef with crossfit - now they (think!) they have something to justify their arguments about it being more unsafe than other sports.

I'd be willing to bet that if a marathon runner dropped dead during a race from a heart attack, or if a football player got kicked in the head and ended up with brain damage there would still be some backlash from people saying how dangerous it is, but nowhere near as much as a severe crossfit injury.
Unfortunately we belong to a community that people love to hate.

Thoughts go out to the coach, that's for sure...

Where did you find a clip of it? Curious to see what actually went down but can't find anything...

I saw this link posted on Outlaw's page. Disclaimer: haven't watched it; don't intend to; it may be somewhat graphic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWJapBpKrQA

The video isn't too graphic. He misses the snatch and loses the bar behind him while falling backwards. The bar hits something behind him (the stack of plates maybe) and comes hard into his lower back.

Just a stupid, tragic accident you probably couldn't duplicate in 1000 years.
  • I ignore threads like that anything you do you can get injured my mom broke her ankle walking down the steps in her house should she stop coming downstairs for the rest of her life? Are steps now dangerous? Derrick Rose got two knee injuries in the last two years is basketball now a dangerous sport that Rose should no loner play? Injures happen it's not just a crossfit thing most people who judge crossfit are the people who have never even tried it

^^^^ This. People can spin anything however they like to suit their agenda. Injuries happen no matter what you do. I don't pay these things no mind.

Oh yeah... one of my regular gym PT's tweeted this as an excuse to do more CF slamming. I'm used to him by now, I know he thinks CF is dangerous and he knows I'll do what I want anyway. He keeps warning me to be careful, but I used to ride horses and keep answering him with instances of rotational falls (a type of fall in the cross country phase of a the eventing discipline, where the horse hits a solid jump on the fore legs and flips over, landing on its back on the other side of the jump with the rider underneath as demonstrated here by Oli Townend and Ashdale Cruise Master http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baUJFtu-Gys) etc. which I am totally sure are far more prolific than serious injuries in CF.

He goes on about wanting to see injury statistics for CF boxes and I go on about his HIIT running programme ruining my knees.

It is always people who have never tried crossfit that are slamming it. Dancers get hurt all the time, what about cheerleaders. and basketball players...every sport has their downside...

What about football, this is probably the biggest sport in America, around 4 kids died last year from this sport, where is the outcry.

I love crossfit, and I ain't going to stop

Sad the coach hurt himself, it really was just a freak accident, I watched the video numerous times, and it is so sad, but nothing where it can be stated it was his fault, it was just one of those things

I cycle alot, and IMO, that is way more dangerous than CF. People get killed ALL THE TIME cycling - hit by cars. I did the MS150 in texas last year, and there were 2 or 3 instances of bad bicycle wrecks that required back braces and an ambulance. The thing about crossfit is that your safety is entirely up to you. You control how much you lift, and your form, and if you injure yourself, it's all on you. You have to know your limits. In cycling, your safety is dependent not only on yourself, but on every person cycling near you (if you are in a group ride) AND the people in the cars on the same roads as you. Way more dangerous, IMO.
  • I used to live in Baltimore, just waking up and going outside in Baltimore is way more dangerous than crossfit

Agree. It's the same misinformation over and over again. I guess ignorance is bliss.

That's actually turned out to be a fairly positive thread. I think people are finally over the 'CrossFit causes more injuries than anything else' myth.

I'm with Inkratlet. I think the weight lifting community has finally gotten secure in itself and is no longer feeling the need to bash Crossfit. Case in point: One of the big lifting websites is T-Nation. Just the other day one of their main columnists wrote an entire piece about the benefits he sees with Crossfit training, and he admitted that he has been doing Crossfit and getting strength gains from it.

^ Yeah. It is pretty sweet. Same author has another one where he talks about Crossfit-style lifting and why, he thinks, it might have some serious advantages to traditional lifting routines of counting sets and reps. .

I checked out the more recent CF articles on that site, seems like people are coming around to seeing that CF is not the boogeyman some people make it out to be.
