Do all ballrooms have to be hideous?

I'm doing my first venue tours this coming weekend. I've been researching and looking at photos for days. I'm getting married in a little over a year but a lot of venues book far out in Los Angeles, especially for Saturdays. The hotels have the best inclusive packages and they can help take care of a lot of the coordinating if you don't hire one, but it seems like all of their ballrooms are super ugly! I've been in several weddings and I know I never noticed the carpet or walls for them, but now it seems like that's all I can see. I'm very modern. Want an indoor wedding because I do not want to stress over cold or rain or nature plus it will be a winter wedding so I want the ceremony and reception at the same place indoors. I just feel like my vision and style won't look good in the choices that most venues offer. What is with the tan, green and red crazy carpets and walls? My colors will be grey and purple. Do you think uplighting will help or should I choose colors that coordinate better with the ballrooms? How are the rest of you brides doing with venues and any tricks for disguising ugly banquet halls that don't cost a fortune?

I am planning to get married March 2015 and have just started looking at venues. I haven't come across any crazy colored venues. Like you said, no one is going to remember your walls or carpet. Do then venues you are looking at have pictures online of past functions? Sometimes seeing the venue decorated helps you envision what it will look like. You can always ask if they will allow you to see it before a schedule event. I went and re-looked at a venue on Thursday that they had set up for a Friday wedding.0

I went to a few locations this weekend. Lots of crazy patterned carpet. I did do searches for wedding photos and often the uplights and table settings do pull focus away from the green paisley. I like very modern, clean style and my colors are moody grey and purple so it's hard to envision my idea when most halls are brown, green, orange rustic or wood type decorum. I'm sure nobody will notice. Unfortunately the modern venues are too expensive.0

I'm having the same problem. I did find a place, but before that, lots of ugly carpet and wallpaper.0

Our reception hall is beautiful on the outside. Barn type building, with beautiful knotty pine, fireplaces and on a perfect wooded lot with a creek running through it. Sadly, the inside has not been updated in decades, they have some pretty hideous carpet and wallpaper/boarder in some rooms. My solution to this, uplighting. Turn off all the lights in the place so guests won't notice and found a dj that does uplighting as part of his package. Ours was only and extra $150 to add! Plus it will add some elegance to the room.0
