Rippetoe's Starting Strength

Despite the fact that I've seen recommendation after recommendation to buy this book, I've put it off, because I've felt like it would be too technical and I wouldn't get much out of it. I didn't want to read a bunch of stuff with words I couldn't understand. Well, I'm here to tell you I was WRONG.

I downloaded it on my Kindle to read on my cruise, but I didn't get a chance. I've been reading it the last few days and I feel like I have learned so much. I thought I could learn just as much by watching videos, but sometimes it's hard to see the little things you need to do to have correct form, especially as a novice lifter. He gives it to you step-by-step, in clear language. Yes, there's a lot of technical stuff in there, too, but after reading the information in plain English, it's easier to understand the technical aspects.

So, if you were thinking about buying it, but have put it off, go do it now. You won't be sorry.

I've actually put it off for similar reasons. That, and I'm a visual learner which is why I've watched loads of YouTube videos. I don't get much out of reading step by step directions, I need to see them done. I may give it a shot though, I enjoy reading, so I'll get something out of it lol

It's low risk to try as the first several chapters are free on kindle. If you don't get on with his style then no need to buy the whole book.

Personally it is something I keep coming back to, the fact you can search the electronic one has helped (hip drive my most recent..). :-)

I'm still trying to get through it. While it's done wonders on helping me with my form (the 3rd edition has lots of graphs and images and photos to demonstrate the written explanations!) the technical stuff kind of put me to sleep and I somewhat forgot about it. I was somewhere in the middle of the power clean, I think?

But, since it so easily puts me to sleep, I might go back to it as my bed time reading material :)

That's exactly what I thought, and the main reason why I put off buying it. I don't know, maybe some of the things he said just clicked with me, even though I've read/seen them before, even watching his videos!

I hate to disagree with you, but I found the book so damn dense that I just could not get through it.

I had a hard time with it too. I made it through the squat section and did get some helpful information from it, but I haven't been able to make myself read the rest of it.

It is definitely dense, but the Kindle version is easy to search. I didn't read it straight through. I skimmed to get to the parts I needed, though I've probably read it all by now. Whenever I have a form question, I find myself referring back to it. Excellent resource.

I have this book, and I friggin' love it. The pictures give you great explanations on leverages.

However, I read it on a long airplane trip so lots of time to kill. The guy next to me said he sees many people read on planes, but never anybody reading about squatting.

I purchased this today for my weekend read. I'm hoping I can pick up a good amount of info from it!
