Purposeful Movement

Alright, folks. I have a question for y'all, just out of curiosity!

Have any of you found that, along your journey, you've started incorporated some more physical activity to your daily routine that, while it doesn't particularly count as exercise, it still gets you moving more than you did previously? An example I've heard a lot is parking farther away at work or when shopping in order to make yourself walk that extra distance.

I have started basically marching in place/doing ridiculous leg movements while at the sink doing the dishes. I also typically dance when doing any other form of housework.

Anyone else have anything they do that they'd like to share?

I found myself wanting to try different things, physical stuff, like Yoga and boxing. And I;m not doing this stuff to burn more calories, but just because I want to be active, it's like my body is asking me to do more stuff..

I do crunches, fake jumping jacks (no jumping, just the movements), yoga, and squats while I watch TV. Just anything to keep moving.
  • Ah I live in the frozen wonders of central canada I now am that person who will drive around the parking lot to find the closest imaginable spot that flip off anyone who dares approach it!

But I do find myself choosing stairs instead of elevators choosing to walk the log way around places! I am hoping with spring and summer I find more reasons than I am with this winter..

I'm also immersed in the fabulous winter wonderland that is in central canada but the weather doesn't bug me too bad (most of the time :grumble: ) We have these outdoor malls. I've been parking more centralized and instead of hopping into my car to go to the next store .... I've been walking across the parking lots and back again. Anyway to increase my steps. :D
This only really works if I don't have the kids in tow. They are terrifying to myself and other drivers walking across a parking lot. :noway:

I was parking just outside the parking lot after I misplaced my parking permit. Decided I liked the little extra walk.

A friend noticed and insisted she loan me a permit she wasn't using (it's for guests). So now I park just inside the parking lot (inside to make her happy) and it's about the same distance. She cracked up when she realized the permit didn't make a difference.

I also do toe lifts and stretches when I'm in the elevator where nobody's watching.

I also poke my arm a lot because it's still surprising that there's a muscle in there. I've been lifting weights about a month(?) now and it's becoming noticeable.

I've bought one of those little balls to put between my knees and squeeze to help strengthen my knees and thigh muscles. I can use it while watching tv or even in my office while sitting at my desk. I've also dug out my old stretch bands....can't say I quite love them yet. But yes, I am finding that I look for ways to add movement to my days.
Also, at work I have a golf cart for driving around the property and I've started walking instead. It was funny at first because people kept stopping to ask if I needed a ride...they thought I must have broken down because they aren't used to seeing me hoofin' it. :)

This is a little icky, but at the end of the shift we take out our garbages, which is quite a ways from the restaurant. When I have time I volunteer to take the others in several trips.... rack up those steps. lol!

Every step counts! I should know, I've been counting mine for ages now.

...and I can dance again! So I do. Whenever mood and music collide. And I don't care who sees.

Mark and Jess, I'm so jealous you can dance! It is such a wonderful way to express the need to move. Congratulations!
