If you are a newbie to gyms and weightlifting and are getting started... keep these things in mind when signing up for a gym that offers a FREE training session...
- Personal trainers are there to SELL YOU on their services.
- They will try to PERSUADE you to do a program that is in THEIR wheelhouse, not yours.
- Some PTs are NOT comfortable with heavy lifting, so will steer you away from it
The first session is not about the attitude of the gym or a reflection of your ability to do this program - it is simply a business person trying to procure more business. Try to steer it in your direction and get what you can out of it, but don't over think it or take it personally. If you can find out ahead which trainers have experience with heavy lifting/power lifting/Starting Strength/Stronglifts, try to get assigned to one of them. Otherwise, take it with a grain of salt...
If you don't get what you want out of that free session, there is always google and this forum...
Good luck!

there was a girl in the weight room last night with a trainer, they were in there for 2 seconds and she had her lifting like 5lb weights, then when i went back to the "cardio area" for my cool down they'd parked her on the eliptical.0

Newbie here, actually have not started yet....This is exactly where I am at, I got a free "training" session with a PT because I joined their version of biggest loser in January. I was a little scared at first but went straight to the point and told her I was interested in lifting heavy and kind of intimidated with that part of the gym and the equipment since I have no clue what I am doing. She told me she loves lifting heavy and encourages people to do so. I was so happy I ended up signing up for 3 sessions. Tomorrow is my first one, I cannot wait!0

That's pretty awesome that you have someone who likes to do the heavy lifts. I had a trainer for a while and she was okay with the SL program, but I felt watching me lift was a waist of her time and my money beyond one or two sessions of checking form. I tasked her with running me through more plyometric exercises and HIIT plans on our training days. Other trainers had more of a powerlifting background and in hind sight I should have gone with them, but I got to know where my trainer's strengths were and what kind of program would match those, but also fit into my goals.
Always good to do a psudo job interview of potential trainers.0
