I'm not much of a meat eater, I could easily live w/o it, so i feel like i'm not getting anywhere close to eating enough protein a day, esp with lifting..should i do a protein shake? do you all?

No I don't. I have some but I don't use it. I try to get enough with just my food. But I am a carnivore... I aim for 80-100 grams. I am going to start eating closer to maintenance on my workout days and on those days i will probably start drinking a protein shake just to get some extra.0

I have protein powder, but I mostly use it in recipes or as a last ditch effort at night to cram in the 25g of protein if I need it. I'm not a huge fan of it. It may be the flavor I have, but I would rather eat something. I really like Clif Builder bars (the crunchy peanut butter is my favorite) and it has a decent macro breakdown of 30g carb/ 10 g fat / 20 g protein. I also eat a good mix of animal based protein sources. I aim for at least 130 g/day, but often go over. My diary is open if you want to take a look. I get a bit from grains (quinoa) and plant sources as well.
But for the most part, no, I don't do the protein shake thing. Just my personal preference, I don't have any negative feelings against them.0 -
I aim for 150/day and I am not a huge meat eater. Well more not a huge lean meat eater which is what I need to stay in calories. I eat quest bars, and drink shakes pretty much daily to meet my goal.0

I'm not drinking them lately, but for a good 6 - 8 months last year I had them once a day. Perfect to have after a workout, or with my breakfast. Because who doesn't like chocolate protein milk with breakfast.0

Eggs and Greek yogurt are staples for me, tuna is good too... Protein powder is not something I am fond of and you will see it in my diary as "witches' brew" when I'm struggling!0

I do, only because it's difficult for me to reach my daily goal of 127g (I don't eat meat). Is it required/necessary? Absolutely not. If you can reach your protein goals without them, more power to you. :drinker:0

I have one every morning when I get back from the gym. I never really liked them until I started using almond milk instead of water - now I love them!
1 cup almond milk
2 ice cubes
scoop protein powder
1/2 banana
= YUM.0 -
I usually have one after lifting, but only with milk. Not sure I could stand the taste without milk. It's not necessary for me to hit 100+ grams of protein though. I'm a big meat eater :happy:0

I have several a week, especially on workout day. I use Jay Robb's with almond milk and usually a half a banana w/a tablespoon of chocolate peanut butter. Yummy!0

I add it to my morning cup of coffee and get free protein for something I drink anyway. *shrug* :ohwell:0

I say why not? It's delicious and an extra source of protein. I mix vanilla in with my greek yogurt and then have it with milk after my night workout. Actually see it as a treat it's so good!0

I have protein and carb shake post workout every training day. It's suits my goals and fits my nutrition. I take the shake mainly for the easy carbs rather than protein as I'm not really a carb eater lol0

thanks for the input ladies! I appreciate it, I constantly ask questions in here and you all always are so helpful! I've been looking into quest bars..I can't drink milk, but I can do almond milk so I may get some to mix in there!0

I'm a big fan of the EAS Advantedge Protein shakes. 100 calories, very low carbs, 17 grams of protein. They sit on my stomach well - - not all pre-made shakes do. At target they're reasonably priced. Not a ton of protein - but not a ton of calories, carbs or fat either.
Most days I have one before leaving the office so that I'm not starving and snacking on junk once I get home.0 -
I have one after every lifting session. Mainly because I lift during my lunch break and when I get done, I can take it back to my desk and drink it. I put fruit and greek yogurt in mine, also, so it's like a meal replacement--about 400 calories. I use the EAS Lean 15.0

I actually like my protein shakes. I'll typically have one after training or as the first meal of the day (depending if I'm doing IF) because it's relatively filling, cheap and really convenient. I found a brand that I really like the taste of so I guess that helps a ton.
I'll also mix it in plain greek yogurt or cottage cheese for added flavor/protein to snacks.
Not going to replace real food with it ever, but given I am one of those people who are always hungry, the protein shake is a better alternative than, say, a muffin xP0 -

I tried this and my protein powder did not like the hot part, it turned into a gross blob that I couldn't break up or stir at all. How do you do it properly?0 -

I mix the protein powder with some cold milk (I use almond) and a little creamer (I use Vanilla Caramel), then add the hot coffee while stirring the cup. It comes out clump free.0 -

Awesome, thanks! Sounds like a much better way to do it than I was trying0 -

Oh, that's right, I like adding a bit of vanilla powder to most of my teas. It's like a chai latte without the extra sugar hehe. I just dump it straight in, doesn't clump too much if at all. It even gives me a nice frothy-ish layer at the top from time to time, lol. It might depend on the brand/quality/composition of the powder?0 -

Agreed, as well as the temperature of the coffee/tea. I personally use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey in Vanilla Ice Cream flavor.0 -
I eat 1.5x my BW in Protein grams a day, so yes, I do the protein thing. Usually drink a protein shake a day.0

I just thought of another way I use the protein powder - in oatmeal! It makes it really creamy.0

I generally have a protein shake every morning before work. I don't usually have them on the weekend, but sometimes I will mix one up with a banana and greek yogurt for extra protein and calcium.
It is hard for me to get enough protein in, so i also have a Quest bar in the afternoons at work.0
