Why such a gain??

So admittedly I haven't been tracking regularly and I've slacked on exercise, but today I did track everything and it was a pretty terrible day- two big cookies for breakfast, lots of snacking, big lunch, and I was still under calories for the day! My settings are at maintain- even though dr said I should be 300 cals over maintenance- it puts me at 2300ish cals! (I'm 5'9" and just hit 200lbs). So if today was a regular day I should be maintaining, not gaining nearly a pound a week - I'm up 14lbs in 16weeks. Once in a while I'll totally binge and have a huge bowl of ice cream or too much pizza or something but most days I'm better than I was today. Anyone else have a body that just packs it on in pregnancy? This is my third baby.

i'm 13 weeks and put on 5 lbs in the last four weeks. I gained a lot with my last pregnancy but that was before i decided to flip my life around and be healthy. I have been slacking too in workouts due to being so tired.

You could be me! This is also my third, and I seem to gain weight no matter what.

I haven't even weighed myself since 12.5 weeks as I don't want to know! I'm 29+2 now. I've exercised an average of 4 times a week throughout, and I've gradually increased my calories to 1900, but I don't always hit that. I should be on about 2300 really with my amount of exercise. I have treats sometimes, but my food is mainly healthy. My treats tend to be something chocolate, I don't really eat pizza and things like that.

    I'm 5'6 and started at 154lbs.

I think some women do gain weight, that's just what our bodies do. I think I gained more in the first trimester as I was so nauseous and eating more carbs than usual. I was also very bloated.

P.S my profile pic is me on Sun at exactly 29 weeks.

I ate maintenance plus 3500 calories in the month of Jan and gained 4lbs instead of the one lb that should be associated with 3500 calories. Logged daily including weighing and measuring. My theory,,. Hormones. Water weight. Baby/placenta/amniotic fluid. It is what it is. I do like having a completed diary in addition to a scale weight.. Then I know I'm getting enough protein, calciume to and am less concerned with weight.

I have had two 50-60 lb pregnancy gains previously so the weight is something I do track, especially because it didn't just melt right off with breastfeeding, diet and exercise. Lol,

Very interesting! Did you eat that much because you were hungry or just as an experiment?

What do you have your diary set to for protein, etc.?

I think it has to be a combo of eating too much/not enough exercise, but also hormones/water retention because when not pregnant if I have a bad weekend, Monday morning I might be up 2-3lbs but I am guaranteed that a few days of pushing fluids and being back on track I will lose most of that in a day or two. When pregnant though, it's like if the scale goes up, it aint never coming back down! And I swear I got back from vacation in FL on the 24th and was 196 and just a few days later, the next time I weighed myself I was 200 and I figured it was due to a bad day, but it just hasn't moved from that 200 mark :(

I set my goal to maintenance for my current weight and go over two or three times/week - I almost never eat under (my maintenance is 1920 and I"ll occasionally have a 1700 day, but it's more common for me to have a 2300 day).

My protein is only 75g but I"m a vegetarian and have typically had a lot of trouble breaking 50, so it does take a lot of focus to hit the goal ... for me. I know some vegetarians who breeze right along with protein, but I'm a pasta lover. I also have had to watch my fiber (I've set it for 30 but if I don't make an effort to get it in, it might end up being as low as 4 or 5!) because I've had TMI issues in the last month.

I totally understand about the scale going up and saying "well, it's bloat or something" and waiting for it to go back down... but then it doesn't. Because you're pregnant. I seem to gain a couple pounds at the time and then hold steady for a bit. And I'll see that the swelling is gone from my ankles and fingers but the pounds are still there. So I move my end goal a bit :P

Anyway, I've been happy with my weight gain for this pregnancy, I think most of us aren't really concerned with how much we weigh at 40 weeks along so much as how much is going to come off after. It's hard to walk that fine line of "Right, I'm pregnant, time to gain weight, but not too much, because I don't want it to still be there when my child is speaking in sentences."

It's probably good to have a realistic time frame for pregnancy weight gain AND postpartum loss :)

The baby, placenta and water really do weigh a lot. I think people think that's an excuse but it's not! I had a seven lb. six oz. baby and by the time I came home from the hospital (two days) I had lost 20 lbs. I lost 10 more over the next week or so. My nurse said I must've been retaining a lot of water - I didn't feel or look like it but I guess I was. I know it's hard but don't stress so much over it.

My last baby was 10lbs and I had lost a solid 25lbs in a week or so. It was similar with my 2st baby (she was 9lbs1oz) and I lost at least 20 right away. I would love to only gain 25-30, then know I only had 5 or so lbs to lose after baby comes out.
