What food serving sizes really look like:

So I just got back from the grocery store, where they were handing out chocolate cake samples, of which I had a piece (I had 1100 calories left to eat today when I left home, and I haven't even done my exercise yet today, so I thought "why not?")

Since I got home, I've been trying to figure out what a serving of cake looks like so I could log my morsel in MFP (finally settled on going with .75 of a cupcake--I know how big a cupcake is, and I only ate probably 1/3 of that amount at the store, but I like to play it safe, so I decided to overshoot the mark in case the sampler was especially caloric.

Anyhow, while I was doing the research, I stumbled upon this great video that shows how big a serving looks like for various foods. I especially love the cheese stix; it's disgusting how deceptive the labeling is on the processed foods we eat in terms of how big a serving is...

Thanks for posting - I knew some of these, but seeing the comparisons really drives the point home. When I'm not on the road, I try to use my food scale as much as possible, so I have a mental image of sizes when I'm traveling and have to guesstimate.

Wow, that does put things in perspective. Thanks for sharing!
  • I didn't start paying attention to the small print on the nutritional facts on packages until I joined MFP.
It's so imperative to read carefully.
    Thanks for the post!!!!!
