Did you know carbs are the only source of energy for the brain, nerve cells, and developing red blood cells, and glucose is utilized as a fuel by every cell in the body? Slow-burning carbohydrates are digested and absorbed slowly and provide the body with a steady source of energy. Quick-burning carbohydrates pass through the digestive system quickly and may produce a crash later on. So what are slow burning carbs? Here is a brief list: ◦Multi-grain bread ◦Whole grain bread Oatmeal ◦Milk ◦Meat ◦Nuts and legumes: peanuts, almonds, pecans, brazil nuts, cashews, etc ◦Seeds and oils: sunflower seed, flax seed, etc ◦Many fruits: apples, oranges, grapefruit, plums, pears, cherries, peaches) ◦Most vegetables: carrots, yams, sweet potato, celery, mustard greens, artichoke, cucumber, leafy greens and salad, spinach, peas, chickpeas. Eating these foods throughout the day will keep your energy high, your appetite curbed and make for GREAT pre workout foods. Additionally, because you will be eating a balanced diet, you will have better success in your weight loss goals. Overall, avoid any "white" form of carb and you will be alright and still get the proper/balanced amount of carbs in your diet. Enjoy your Saturday!
