Crossfit for the Traveler

I've made the comittment to join a box near my home and at the very least get through a solid foundations course. I travel a lot (work and personal). I was wondering if any of you have done much "walk in" workouts at boxes when you're away from your home. Experiences? Things I should look for/avoid/etc?

Thanks!

I'm on the road every week and stop in at various boxes all the time, I use this website for locating boxes http://map.crossfit.com/

Once I find a box i will look on their web-site to see what kind of WOD's they are doing, if it's something I can do in a hotel room I'll save the $20.00 and just workout at the hotel but if it's an exercise I've wanted I will try to make it a point to drop in.

Most places charge $20.00 to $30.00 for a drop-in fee or they ask that you buy a shirt from them.
I also try to e-mail them just to let them know I that I plan on dropping by.

The main site just published an article about Road Warriors that's a decent read and might also give you some tips. http://journal.crossfit.com/2014/02/wrangling-the-road-warriors.tpl

Also, on the myWOD app there are quite a few built in "Road WODs" which could conceivably be done in a hotel gym or even in your room.

I haven't done this yet but I do think it would be really cool to collect CrossFit shirts from around the world. :drinker:

We get drop-ins from time to time. They are always welcome - the more the merrier!

    +1

and agree about the BW / "hotel room" WoDs. if nothing else, air squats, lunges, duck walks, bear crawls, and burpees (*love*) are possible.

wrt the xfit shirts - love it! I like taking one from our gym to give to the hosting gym - sort as of an open invitation if anyone were to pass through our little ville.

THANK YOU for this info!! I'm heading overseas for 5 weeks in the middle of the year (World Cup, here I come!!) and am planning on visiting at least one box in each country (and collecting shirts, obviously) so that map site will definitely come in handy!!

I did my first drop-in class a month ago, and I did some research first.

Make sure you email the box and let them know you're coming, and to what class.
Be prepared to pay a little or buy a shirt.
You will have to prove your proficiency so be prepared to get there a little early.
If you have questions, obviously still ask.

Thought I'd post an update. I've been traveling alot and have now dropped into three different boxes (Houston, Pensacola and Orlando). Great coaches at each location, smaller early morning classes, and surprisingly, no large t-shirts.

I appreciate the advise from everyone. It really helped me find a good box, get smoothly into a class and keep my training on path.

Glad you had a good experience. I've done it while travelling a few times too and have always had great experiences and met some great coaches.
I also love the t-shirt collecting aspect, I used to do race tshirts, now I do both.

Last year's trip to California - in shirts. Left CrossFit Ethos (Laguna Hills), top middle surfing Huntington Beach, bottom middle Griffith Park trail Half Marathon in Hollywood, and right - Pearl Jam concert t-shirt.

I make it a point to get a shirt (and wod) from my travels. I've gotten in some pretty cool wods. Typically costs $20 but sometimes $5. My favorite was Barcelona doing a wod in Spanish, when I don't speak Spanish.

I've wondered about that, how do you get in touch with them or ask questions?

I just search them on the CrossFit site and email them or Facebook message them.
I was concerned about the Spanish thing in San Juan, PR but their pages were all in English. I ended up not getting to go anyway due to circumstances.

ETA - a few of the spots I have been to will waive the drop in fee if you are buying a tshirt (not a bad idea since we buy one each, plus one for a couple of the coaches at our box).
