New to IVF journey

Hi all. My name is Jess. My husband and I are just starting our journey. I'm not sure what our official "diagnosis" is, but for us the issue is inadequate sperm. So far, things look ok with me, but I am still awaiting further tests. At this stage we meet the medical and "time of trying" criteria for us to be eligible for government funding, but I have to get my BMI down to meet the last criteria. I have worked out that I need to lose approximately 25kg to get to where I need to be. I know I need to lose weight for my overall health, and I WANT THIS FOR MY FAMILY, but sometimes it feels like such a big target and weight on my shoulders (pardon the pun), that it gets so overwhelming. At the moment I have to take it one day at a time, because if I look at the total number, and the time factor (hoping to start treatment in May), it gets too much to handle.
We hope to see our specialist again in March. Our proposed treatment plan is that my husband will undergo 4mths of hormone treatment, then they will take whatever sperm they can and go from there. I think the next step will be IVF, but I'm not sure if IUI is still an option. I would also like to go armed with lots of questions, but don't quite know exactly what questions I should ask. Any suggestions? I have heard things like the clinic could phone one day saying we need to be an appointment the next day, so this could impact hugely on work. Thankfully my boss is incredibly supportive. I am a nurse who works shiftwork in a paediatric ward (emotionally challenging at times).
I would also like to know what to expect if eggs are removed from me. Is it painful? Are there side effects and if so what sort? Will I go on hormones and how can this affect me?
I decided to join this group because I needed to talk to people who have been through this journey before, and can perhaps help me to prepare myself for the journey ahead. I know I likely can't be fully prepared until we're actually going through it, but having some sort of idea might help.
I will greatly appreciate any advice or support you can give us. Please know our prayers are with you all also.

Jess xx

    Hi Jess,

I have been through 6 rounds of IVF and am having a break for a while. I am not going to lie to you - IT IS HARD.

The emotional, physical and life toll is more than most people imagine. All I can say is be realistic. I had grand delusions that we would be successful first time round and the disappointment was a very bitter pill.

    My thoughts are with you,
    Bec

    Hi Bec,

Thanks for that :) If you have any other advice or ideas of things I should ask so I can be as prepared as possible, please feel free to share them. I would greatly appreciate it.

    Hi Jes and Bec

Just wondered how you were both doing and if you had any success yet?
