gaining more because I have been dieting?

I'm so frustrated here. I'm almost 20 weeks and have gained pretty darn near 20lbs. I have MFP set to maintenance and actually had it at "lose .5lb" for the first 15 weeks or so. I gained about 10lbs in the first 10 weeks as that coincided with the holidays and I nearly always gain 10lbs over the holidays...that's another issue all together. But since then I've really tried to take steps to get things under control. I work out 30min 3-5 times a week and when I track (which, I admit isn't every day but I'm trying) I stay pretty close to my diary, over or under by a hundred give or take. Sure, I have big food days, chinese and ice cream in one day or something silly like that, but for the most part I'm eating good, homemade, healthy foods and sticking pretty close to my diary. But still, every week, it's up a pound. I'm wondering if my 2+ years of eating 1400 or so calories and 30-40lb weight loss has "ruined" my body and now that I'm eating "normal" calories it doesn't know how to deal and is just hanging onto EVERYTHING? My last pregnancy I gained 35-40lbs but I ate like absolute crap and never worked out, I am on track to gain that much again or more and my lifestyle is so much healthier now. I posted a question like this on my pregnancy board and everyone said I was eating too much, MFP has me set at 2300 calories to maintain my 5'9" 186lb pre-preg weight...WDYT?

My maintenance is at 2400 but I am overweight. I am in my second trimester and have calories set to 2300 but sometimes I go over and I always go over 2000 every day. Focus on WHAT you're eating and not necessarily how much. Still indulge but limit junk foods to once or twice a week. That's been hard for me. Also, water retention is crazy during pregnancy. I was up almost 8 pounds in one week after my son's birthday party because of all the carbs I ate. Our bodies are designed to gain weight while pregnant and the more you stress the worse it is for you and your baby. Just eat mostly healthy foods and drink tons of water, exercise while you can and everything will be great. Sorry if this sounds kind of "fluffy" but this is what I have to tell myself too, LOL.0

Yeah I was overweight when I got pg too. After baby #2 I lost 40+ and was down to 169 at my lowest (which was pretty great for my body type even though it was at the very highest end of normal BMI) But over this past year I gained back quite a lot so started at 186, which was still 10lbs less than with baby #1 and 30lbs less than #2. I am doing pretty much what you described, junk food is only 1-2 times a week, I drink tons of water, have been pooping regularly (TMI! LOL). When not pregnant though I could have pizza today and tomorrow the scale would put me up 2-3lbs which I would chalk up to sodium/water retention, but in a day or so of healthy eating I would be back to normal. Now though, if I have a bad day, next morning the scale might be up 2lbs and it NEVER COMES OFF! So frustrating! LIke we had chinese this weekend and I just don't dare get on the scale because I probably gained 3 more pounds. I'm wondering if I should just ditch the scale all together, it stresses me out so much.0 -
You sound like me! I always gain a lot when I'm pregnant, even when I'm doing things the right way! With my first, I ate fairly unhealthy and huge portions, did not get regular exercise, and worked at a sit down job 45-50 hours a week. I gained 45lbs (and had hbp by 41 weeks, major swelling, carpel tunnel in my wrist, etc) . With my second pregnancy, I had learned about portion control and got into heavy exercise beforehand and started the pregnancy a good 10lbs less than I had began my first. I ate really healthy (for the most part) and got daily exercise. I STILL gained 45lbs! lol But I was a lot stronger and healthier. None of the same problems I had with my first.
Now with my third pregnancy, I am finding the same thing. I still exercise and usually eat ok (except for occasional binges of chinese or ice cream,,,thank you Valentines Day! lol) and am still gaining. I generally eat around 2000-2200 calories a day and burn at least 400 calories with my workouts ( averaging every other day). I'm only 10 weeks and have gained between 5-7lbs already. I'm hoping things slow down in the second trimester when I will hopefully have more energy to exercise daily, but I'm realizing my body must know what its doing. (Plus my boobs must weigh close to 5 lbs! LOL j/k) But seriously, we are supposed to gain at least 25 lbs during pregnancy! I think there is so much pressure to not gain very much, but if you are eating healthy food and keeping yourself active and strong, then you are doing everything right and the number at the end is inconsequential! I know even if I gain 45 lbs again this time, 20 of it will be gone in a few weeks, and if I eat right and exercise, the rest will come off over the next year. (Despite breastfeeding exclusively, weight does NOT melt off of me! LOL)0 -
Yes! I wouldn't even bother weighing very often. Maybe monthly! The same thing happens with me. I thought I'd be able to drop 10lbs right away (b/c I'd put on 15 right before getting preggo). Not only have I not been able to drop any, I've gained more than is "acceptable" for the first trimester and I'm sure by 13 weeks, I'll have gained 10. I'm not checking the scale very often b/c it IS depressing. lol And same thing with the binging weight bursts! If I put on 2-3 lbs from overindulging, it doesn't go anywhere! And honestly, if 25-35lbs is a guideline, than who is to say 40-45lbs isn't what your body and baby needs? Its hard to read threads in here sometimes where people don't gain anything until 20 weeks and then end up gaining 20 lbs total! Like I heard someone else say, those are the people that are most likely to post about it! lol But I think far more people gain normal amounts of weight like us and its perfectly healthy!0

Agree with the other ladies, don't weigh yourself. I don't even look when I'm at the doctor's office because all it does is stress me out, but last time the nurse told me and that's how I knew I had gained that much. I haven't gained much so far but I want to stay under 250. I am six feet tall so baby has lots of room to grow. I got pregnant only 7 months after having my first child so didn't even get a chance to take much of the weight off from last time.0

thanks ladies you are making me feel a lot better! And LOL I think I've gained at least 5lbs a boob too - they are ginormous this time!
Just got on the scale - yup, up 3 freaking pounds since eating that chinese food. Niice.0 -
Oh thank god there is someone else with this problem! I look at the "how much have you gained" thread and I'm like, how the hell are people only gaining 10-15 pounds by week 26? I'm over the 25 pound mark already and I've been, for the most part, staying on track and doing what exercising I can. I gained 52 with my first, lost all but 7 pounds and I'm heading right back to that 52 pound gain. I've often wondered if my metabolism is now off whack with dieting to lose the baby weight from my first. It's that or I'm just one of those pregnancy gainers. My take is that I lost the weight once and I can do it again, even though it's a bummer.0

I am glad someone stated this thread. I have been curious as well. How the heck can I be eating at maintenance (with several days in the month actually eating at below maintenance) and gain 12lbs in a month!? It can't all be baby or even water - 12lbs is a lot and it never came off either and is still steadily creeping up.
Supposedly, when you are pregnant, your metabolism runs higher than normal. Also, supposedly, eating averagely just right below maintenance should equal in weight loss. How the heck am I gaining 3lbs a week then??
I got really sick with morning sickness and lost 17 lbs in the beginning of this pregnancy. I have been telling myself that this is the reason I have been gaining 3lbs a week this past 5 weeks - because my body is trying to catch back up. But, I am not buying it. This weight climb is crazy.0 -
I haven't even weighed myself since 12.5 weeks, and that was only because I had to! I always gain in pregnancy despite doing everything right.
In my first pregnancy I'd just lost about 40lbs for my wedding by eating about 1200 calories a day for nearly a year and exercising loads. So I was still healthy, and I still exercised, but I ate more than 1200 calories and after I had my son it still took me nealy a year to wear my pre-pregnancy jeans, and they were still a little tight.
I got pregnant the 2nd time when my first was 13 months, and due to nausea and tiredness and some early bleeding I pretty much stopped exercising and gained loads. I didn't eat badly though, and I still went for lots of walks with my son. I'm not really someone who eats lots of junk food, although I do have a sweet tooth in pregnancy.
So, after my daughter I lost 67lbs, was a UK size 10/12 (US6/8) and was in the best shape I'd been in for 10 years. I'm 32 +3 now and I've exercised throughout and have mainly been healthy. I've logged on here pretty much every day, starting on 1500 calories, upping to 1800, and now 2000 for the third trimester. I started at 154lbs, I'm 5'6, workout 4 times a week on average, work part time as a teacher so on my feet all the time, and look after an active 2 and 4 year old. So MFP still tells me I'll lose weight in 5 weeks lol.
I'm fairly sure I've gained more than the recommended weight already, which is why I haven't weighed myself. I've done everything right, and I was eating 1500 calories a day for about a year before getting pregnant, so I wasn't starving myself like before!
I get really depressed when I read the weight gain thread, and when I look at some of the food diaries they eat far more junk than I do! I guess I just have to accept that I gain weight easily and that I'll have to work hard to lose it again. I started off this pregnancy lighter than I started my first, and I know I've put on less weight than 2nd time, so at least I won't have 67lbs to lose!0 -
I dont know how you can stand not knowing, lol. That is probably the biggest reason I am driving myself crazy, I with myself 2 time a week at least.0

If I did weigh myself and found I'd gained loads, there's nothing I could do now, so I'd just be miserable. Ignorance is bliss0 -
I'm so glad my doctor's office scale is in KG, so I have no idea how much I weigh. I have weighed myself at home and I'm up 42lbs, which is nuts. I have 4 weeks to go. I gained 45lbs with my daughter, and was hoping for 35 or less this time around, HA. Doesn't seem to matter what I eat or dont' eat, I gain at least a pound a week. I even bought a BodyMedia arm band, so I know my maintenance is about 2000 a day. I stay at that or below and I still gain. Oh well. I plan on excercising as soon as I'm cleared. At least I know it's not 45lbs of fat.0

Exactly! When I was pregnant with my son I went from 212 to 255. I was down to 225 at my 6 week post partum checkup.0
