Wild - From Lost to Found on the Pacific Coast Trail by Cheryl Strayed.

Sunny Florida! It's 80 degrees and the natives are running around with long sleeves and jackets on complaining of the "cold."

Brought my italian dry salame and See's candy with me and I'm happy to be here. My future daughter-in-law performed a fashion show of all the wedding dresses she has purchased. Unfortunately, none were quite right for her, but she's on the right track. Much more shopping to do.

Happy reading.

Mary

L- were you able to find the book? My brother lives in Jacksonville.

M- things happening even more exciting than picking up your cat? Is the wedding soon? Getting lots of rain out here. Wild looks like it will lend itself to lots of discussion. Sees, salami and ....sourdough.

    Happy Reading

The book is on its way thru the library system to me. Apparently a very popular book with book clubs right now.

Started the book and wow, it's painful at first. But now I'm hooked.

Yes, I picked up my cat and I'm moving into an apartment in Dania Beach next week. I was hoping to rent a house, but I decided to save some money this year. We'll see what next year brings. Of course, I'm taking a trip to California at the beginning of April and then again in July (maybe) and Christmas, of course! In April I'll be picking up my car and driving across country again. Somewhere in there I have to arrange for movers to bring 1/2 of my stuff to Florida. The wedding is mid-May and thankfully it's a small ceremony on the beach with only 6 people.

What do you think of the book so far?

    Good Morning Diamondettes,

Wow Mary, I think there is a book in your year of change. I wondered if the California girl is becoming a Florida gal.

The book is really engaging. Cheryl makes so many irresponsible (and frightening) decisions before going on the PCT - it will be interesting to see what happens. She is certainly unprepared for the journey. I am liking the book/ M

Overall I liked the book even though some of it was hard to read because of the subject matter. I would love to do a hike like that. I used to do day hikes alone and everyone thought I was crazy but I loved it. When I was working I had to hike alone a lot, but I had a radio to carry along with me. I laughed when she talked about some of the ways she kept herself going because I did the same thing! I just assumed I was the only person on earth that did those things. I counted my steps in the same way when the hills were steep and sang out loud especially when i felt like something was watching me. . I will always remember the feeling of utter relief when I would get back to my truck, hop in, and lock the doors behind me.

I just moved into an apartment today and just got internet service today, too. Sorry for the long silence. Hope you are both enjoying the nice spring weather.

    Mary

PS I'm not making any commitments about living in one particular area; I'm still paying California taxes even though I have a lease in Florida. I haven't got the travel bug squashed yet. I'd still like to live in Massachusetts or Vermont during Sept/Oct/Nov, try out North and South Carolina, and stay in Hawaii for 6 months.

Yes, her choices were difficult to read about and if it were fiction they would be kind of unbelievable. She did redeem herself in the end and that was uplifting. I admire someone who would take such a hike but I am too cowardly. 2 feet wide path, not me.

As I said earlier there is a book in your travels. New England in the fall sounds good. The Carolinas have some beautiful places.
Do you have a favorite island ? Happy times with your travels. Maybe we could call our group - books and travels.

Lenore - Did you ever get to read the book?
Mary- If you want to read book about a hike that is so funny. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson fills the bill.

    Who selects the next book?

I wouldn't know where to start with writing a book, but I might call it something like 'retire early and enjoy life.'

It's my turn to pick a book. In January I stated I would pick a Barbara Kingsolver book; however I've now read 2 more books by her and I'm a little Solvered-out. I was thinking of possibly picking a mystery. I'll let you all know; I have 2 whole days to figure it out.

I like the Kona coast on Hawaii. I also like Kauaii. And the north shore of Oahu. It might be hard to decide. I lived in Aiea as a kid so I like the Diamond Head view, too.

Maybe not a book but try to keep a journal. A mystery would be fun. I just finished the second book by Julia Spencer- Fleming. Mysteries are not usually my thing, so I can't help. But I am up for anything.

I have not been to Kauai but I do like Kona, Oahu and Maui.

I retired early and traveled like crazy. I would still be on the road if my hubby's health permitted. So do it while you can. Most beautiful place I went to ...I think would be Bora Bora.

Enjoy your new apt. and that lovely white sand.
