Hey y'all!
Welcome to Fight for Fitness! I'm so excited about getitng to know all of you & what God's going to do here! Before we get started on all of that, I would love everyone to post a snippet of why you're "here" and what you're goals/struggles are as it related to health/fitness (answer 4 questions at the end). You could be as brief or as personal as you'd like, but hopefully this'll just serve as a springboard for us to continue to get to know one another/pray for each other! I'll get us started.
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Nina. As I began praying about what area to focus on (as a 31:30 Core member), I realized that almost every conversation with women over the last few months (well always I guess) somehow came around to the topics of weight loss, health, etc. It plays such a vital role in our self esteem and identity as women, and if we dig a little deeper...is often connected to strongholds in our lives that have got to go! Myself included! When setting to ccomplish our goals (in general, but we'll focus on health here), most of us are pretty great as making "to-do" lists, setting unreasonable expectations for ourselves, and beating ourselves up when we fail. Staying committed to it, regardless of how we "feel" is another story.
I've always struggled with my weight for a variety of reasons. About 2 years ago, I was diagnosed with PCOS, a syndrome that causes hormonal imbalances in women, as if we don't struggle with that anyway! lol Anyway, it makes losing weight even harder (literally, slows metabolism and all), so I would often go hard, plateu, then just get frustrated and give up...rinse...and repeat! However, doing Whole30 program (www.whole30.com) this past month (5 days to go!) has taught me so much about my health, myself, and my walk with God. Regardless of how it felt, even when I would've killed for a piece of chocolate or a big cheesy quesadilla, I stuck to it! Did I lose as much as I'd like to? probably not. Do I feel better? sometimes. Was it worth it? Absoutely! Struggling with PCOS has gotten a lot harder over the last 2 mths as it affects my emotions often. I never say "I know how you feel" but I will say I have experienced a great deal of frustration over things beyond my control, but I know that my resolve/determination (in anything God sets before me) can't be based on my emotions! I can pour them out to Him, becuase He is a Comforter and a God who delights when we pour our heart out to Him...but why not do that as you walk on Kelly Drive or get on the treadmill, etc! Whatever your struggle is surrounded your weight/health, take some time and pray that He'll show you those stongholds and give you a focus/determination that's never been there before!
Regardless of how I feel, I know that God wants me to be healthy and whole, in every aspect of my life...and (contrary to how I've lived most of my life!) I don't get to pick and choose which ones! So, I'm ready and I hope you are too! If you really are ready to get healthy, take some time to answer these questions. We'd love to hear them on here! If you don't feel comfortable, then just write them in a journal or better yet, somewhere that'll be a reminder for you every day!
1) What is your #1 health goal (be specific)? *

Thanks Nina! This was super encouraging. My goals are to be healthy, stronger, and look good. I always hated working out because I would lose a ton of weight and look anorexic and get picked on more for being thin. I would eat whatever I wanted to trying to gain weight and have the "Black Girl body" big booty and thin waist. But this wasn't in my genetic makeup and I didn't feel good because of it. This time I'm like I need to develop better eating habits especially as my metabolism slowed down and I still couldn't gain the weight in the areas that mattered most to me (ie bigger breast and butt) I needed to be fit and healthy. I joined a gym but didn't go often. Then my 72 year old friend challenged me to take a weight lifting class stressing the need for a single lady needing to be strong enough to move furniture and lift heavy items. I stated the class 1 year ago and I've enjoyed the benefits of weight lifting. I Don't have a deadline on my goals just to improve each month and push myself harder. I hope to share what I've learned from my journey with others whether it's recipes, workout tips, blogs that inspire me, and encouragement.0

1. My goal is just to eat healthier. I went through about 2 months of eating whatever and not checking the scale. It felt great for awhile but then I realized I was getting easily winded and busting out of my clothes. So my goal is just be healthier. If I lose 4 or 5 pounds along the way that's the cherry on top! I salsa dance and it is just easier to be light on your feet when you're in shape.
2. My fear is I'll lose my way. I have difficulties with restraint at times and I'm not an organic food or salad lover. I commend you juicers, vegans, and Trader Joe's lovers but I'm not really about that life. So I just want stay on course as far as eating healthy but tasty foods.
3. I would like to have a "summer body", I'm not even going to lie. When I went to Miami I was cramming exercising in to lose weight before my vacation. I'd prefer to be coasting and adjusted to my diet and exercise routine by June or July.
4. I want friendship, community, and accountability. I'm encouraged by seeing the progress of others. Like Vonnie makes me want to lift weights now. lol:laugh:0 -

Hi Guys! Sorry it took me so long to post!
1) My number one health goal would be to break bad eating habits, and learn how to eat right, exercise, and lose weight. I need to lose 40 pounds this year, and so far I haven't been able to lose anything.
2) My biggest fear is that I will never reach my goal. I also have a fear that if I do reach my goal, I will just gain the weight back. That's why I want to make conscious changes that will stick, so that I can live a healthy life.
3) I would like to lose 40 pounds by the end of the year... or as soon as possible.
4) I need a workout partner. I currently have a membership at SWEAT Fitness. I love the gym, but I would like to have a partner to keep me accountable, and so that I don't feel alone in my efforts.0 -
1) What is your #1 health goal (be specific)? *
I started my weight loss journey in December 2012 when I hit the 200 lb mark. Obesity has been a syndrome within the women in my family and this has motivated me to lose the weight, and become healthy and fit for my son who loves to run all the time! I have lost about 45 lbs and would like to lose a couple more pounds. I would like to try to embrace clean eating as a lifestyle more. More than anything, I want to become toned, fit, and build up my endurance. I love running and want to become a better runner. I am in the process of training for a half marathon.
2) What fears do you have related to your goal? *
My main fear is failure. I feel as though I have achieved significant goals in related to my health and fitness. At times, I listen to some naysayers around me and it discourages me. However, I persist to push through those negative voices and keep working on my health goals.
3) How soon do you want to achieve your goal (days/months)? *
I really don't have a deadline. I would like to be consistent with healthy eating and nutrition. I would also like to maintain the weight that I am at and not get to the point where I was overweight.
4) What do you hope to get from this group?
I absolutely would like to help keep others accountable. My co workers call me a "drill sergeant" because I attempt to hold them accountable in what they are eating. I also would not mind having a workout partner or going to fitness classes with others in this group. It is also more encouraging and fun to embrace fitness with others.0
