Green Smoothie For Breakfast

I made my first green smoothie this morning that was loosely based on Ben Greenfield's latest smoothie video. The most surprising thing that I put in there was an avocado pit. Weird. It's supposed to be really good for you. Has anyone else here already been doing this? My smoothie tasted okay, definitely not great, but palatable enough. The best thing about it was that I've been full for over 5 hours! Good thing too, since it was almost 600 cals.
If anyone is interested, all of the items I added are in my breakfast diary for this morning accept for the coffee...I drank that separately.

I've tried a couple of green smoothies before but thought pretty much the same thing... it was okay, but not great. I might try more in the summer when we have more fresh veggies available. Who knows, I might hit on a combination that tastes good!0

I made another one this morning with carrot, kale, ginger, and a beet (and mct oil and butter). It was another, meh. Ha ha! Not great and not bad. I'm sure it's very healthy and it was filling too. I wasn't sure how I would feel about drinking my calories, since I'm not really hungry for other foods (for at least a few hours), it's turning out to work pretty well for me. Also since it's not a juice, I'm not throwing away a large part of the actual fruit and/or vegetable. Everything is getting consumed.
I'm in the NSNG Facebook group and there are lots of green smoothie recipes posted there that have been tested already. I think I'll try some of those to see if I can find anything that I really think is delicious.0 -
It seems like most people say to start with a little more fruit then work your way up to mostly green. Maybe try it that way and see how you like it. I saw a formula the other day of 60% fruit and 40% green. This seems like a bit much fruit, though. I also noticed that Ben's tend to have NO fruit, so maybe that's why it was "meh".0

Okay, so, I'm sitting outside, watching the dogs play and listening to the birds chirp with a nice breeze and my first green smoothie.
I found a "starter" recipe, but it seemed to have WAY too much fruit, so I cut it back and added a little more green. I used an entire 5 oz container of spinach and arugula mix(probably about 3 cups, tightly packed), 1 banana, 1 whole avocado(yes, pit and all), 4 or 5 brazil nuts, 1 cup of fresh pineapple, and 1 cup of frozen mango. I honestly could have probably done half the fruit and been good. This is delicious, but I feel there is too much fruit. The recipe called for 2 bananas, 1 cup mango, 1 cup pineapple, 2 cups spinach, 2 cups water. I only used about 3 oz of water to make a "chewable" smoothie as Ben suggests.
I know this is a double post, but it seems to be a little more relevant to this thread.
I just remembered I had some bok choy greens, so I dumped it back in and added that.0 -
I am always so scared of drinking my calories. I love the idea of getting so many veggies this way. Especially getting them into my kids! But my problem is that I never really feel full. I can physically feel full, but I always still want something to eat. ( I know, I'm broken.) So when I've done smoothies in the past, I end up eating shortly thereafter and then my calorie count for the day is through the roof.
Now, I love a juice fast. I'm good with "all or nothing" so if all I can have is juice, it all turns out ok. My juice is SOO much cucumber and celery that they are not that calorically high. And after a few days, amazingly, my hunger subsides quite a bit.
I'm going to do a juice fast on March 30th for anyone who wants to join for a few days of juicing support. I'll make a new thread. You can do smoothies only, juice only, smoothies & juice, whatever. Some folks join us and do one super clean meal per day and have the other meals be smoothies or juice.
I think it is ALL good if it gets me eating tons of nutrient-rich veggies and away from everything else for a few days.
Keep on keepin' on People!!0
