Egg Yolks

Do you eat them? If not, why? Do you not like the taste or are you worried about cholesterol and fat? Just curious.

I don't eat them often enough to worry about the cholesterol and fat, but when I want an egg, I want the whole egg.
About the only time I will an egg is on Saturday morning. During the week it's always plain fat-free Greek yogurt with vanilla whey protein powder and frozen berries. Occasionally I will have some type of hot cereal with oats or whole grains, but I'm trying to limit that as much as possible. So having an egg is almost like a treat for me.0 -
I eat the whole thing. I'm in the camp of not worrying about fat(if its good), so the whole egg doesn't bother me. Plus, I just rather the taste.0

I eat a fried egg sandwich every morning. I use the whole egg cook it in olive oil, 1 slice of bread and add 1/2 ounce of cheddar cheese. My cholesterol is great.0

That's good stuff! I love seeing how other people eat, what they don't eat, and why.
Today was the first day that I through a whole pastured egg (shell and all) into my smoothie. This idea came from Ben Greenfield, which is where I also got the idea to put the avocado pit in my smoothing. The pit worked well, but I was crunching on the egg shell with every drink of my smoothie. I blended it in my vitamix for probably close to a minute just to make sure it was good to go. Has anyone else tried this and if so, what do you think?
Here's the post to Ben's aritcle: http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/2014/02/benefits-of-blending/0 -
Wow, perfect timing, Angela! I am planning to try the juice fast with Carol, coming up, and I don't have a juicer. That means that I'll be blending. I probably won't start my experience with a whole egg, but we'll see. As for the avocado pit... again, we'll see. I plan to start off with a little fruitier, just to get the initial "grossness" out of the way, but I will work up to more veggie and less fruit. Do you have any good recipes that you could share? I'll probably go shopping soon and try something for lunch, today.0

I'm sorry, I don't have any recipes. I've just been throwing whatever I have in my fridge, freezer, and cabinents in there. I bought a big bag of kale and I throw at least two handfuls of that in there, one carrot, a little fresh ginger root, one to two dates (for sweetness), and then I pick either pineapple, frozen berries, or a couple of clementines for a little more sweetness. When I made the beet smoothie, I didn't use that much kale just because I thought that two bitter veggies would be way too bitter overall. I think that more carrots, ginger, and a just a little kale would be pretty good too. I usually add some butter and mct oil, a Tbsp of organic apple cider vinegar, and a pinch of sea salt.
Also, I like adding the raw farm fresh egg. I think I'll continue to do that but when I do I'll leave out one of the other fats or maybe both of them. You can't taste the egg at all. My eggs are from a friend who has his own chickens and they aren't fed any grains at all. I wouldn't use a standard egg straight from a grocery store although I'm sure that wouldn't really hurt me either.
So far I think that all options have worked really nicely. They've kept me full for hours and I really love that.
Good luck with your smoothie adventures!0 -
Okay, so, I'm sitting outside, watching the dogs play and listening to the birds chirp with a nice breeze and my first green smoothie.
I found a "starter" recipe, but it seemed to have WAY too much fruit, so I cut it back and added a little more green. I used an entire 5 oz container of spinach and arugula mix(probably about 3 cups, tightly packed), 1 banana, 1 whole avocado(yes, pit and all), 4 or 5 brazil nuts, 1 cup of fresh pineapple, and 1 cup of frozen mango. I honestly could have probably done half the fruit and been good. This is delicious, but I feel there is too much fruit. The recipe called for 2 bananas, 1 cup mango, 1 cup pineapple, 2 cups spinach, 2 cups water. I only used about 3 oz of water to make a "chewable" smoothie as Ben suggests.
I just remembered I had some bok choy greens, so I dumped it back in and added that.0 -
That smoothie DOES sound yummy!! I think you are smart to start out like that and just cut back on the fruit as you get used to the idea of drinking a meal. If you can tolerate more veggies, well, the more veggie to fruit ratio is probably best. But when I do the juice fast, I always have more fruit on the first day. Even each day - I start with OJ/Carrot and work my way to more celery/cucumber with a bit of apple/lemon/ginger. The avocado pit and egg shells are cracking me up! I am positive that there are good things in there for us. But I think Angela needs to get over to HealthnutsAnonymous and start spilling her guts about what all she has tried in the name of health. She is my kinda gal. I have a feeling there are some stories!! LOL
Angela: I don't eat the yolk much but not because of the fat or cholesterol. I am just back to watching my overall caloric intake and I LOVE bacon, Avocado, Cheese, Sour Cream and other fats. So I end up having 3 or 4 eggwhites so I have enough calories to top it off with some of these other fats. If I don't have the other stuff, I will eat the whole egg.
Very cool to read everyone's ideas on this.0 -
That smoothie does sound great!
Carol - I haven't heard of HealthNutsAnonymous but I'll check it out now. Yes, I try all kinds of weird things just because Ben Greenfield, Robb Wolf, or some other podcaster or guest mentions it. I'm an easy mark: I can't watch an informercial or QVC without buying the things they are pimping out. That's how I bought my Vitamix and my Dyson vacuum, which were both lucky buys. That's also why I'm all over the place from listening to all these podcasts on my daily commutes and when I walk and run. From strict ketosis, to carb refeeds, to hormone cures, to eating seeds and egg shells, to bio-hacking...my head is spinning!0 -
I would just be 100% really really sure the egg shells are sparkling clean on before tossing them in. Salmonella, weird chemical sprays, etc.
I eat the yolks. Not often enough to be at all concerned. I'm a poster child for great blood chemistry no matter how many eggs or how much meat.0 -
My eggs are definitely cleaned (by me) and for sure there are no chemicals on them. The ones I put in my smoothies come from my friends back yard.0
