How could this happen?

I am eating right, working out 4-5 times a week and i was putting on 1 lb per week.
This past week alone, i have gained an extra 2.8 lbs, IN ONE WEEK!! I have already gained 19 lbs so far and I am only 24 weeks!
I don't know what to do with all that. I am trying my best to maintain healthy eating and exercise, yet the weight just keep increasing.
I am so frustrated. I don't want to spend other 2 years trying to lose the baby weight

I gained 52 pounds with my first and I'm resigning myself to the fact that I will likely gain that amount again. This time I have been watching what I eat and I'm actually exercising, which didn't happen the first time around. I just gain a lot of weight while pregnant I guess. I'll have to worry about losing the weight afterwards because what the hell else am I going to do? As long as baby is healthy, I can live with it. You're not alone though, there are a lot of people who don't just gain 15-20 pounds.0

This is exactly what happened to me last time! I gained 55 lbs, never exercised and was eating like a monster.
I thought things will be different this time around with calorie counting and exercise. It doesn't seem to be the case thoughI gained 52 pounds with my first and I'm resigning myself to the fact that I will likely gain that amount again. Between 20 and 30 weeks you may often have big jumps in weight gain, but that's the baby gaining, not you. Gaining a pound a week during pregnancy isn't a disaster and is infact quite common, just not so uniformly. What you should be eating depends on what weight you started out at. If you were much overweight you may have had the ok from your doctor to continue to eat at a small deficit. If you were only a little overweight you probably want to be eating at maintenance and if you were a healthy weight you'd probably need to add 200 to 300 calories a day to gain the appropriate weight. More importantly a good pregnancy multivitamin will help minimise cravings and overeating.
Everyone gains during pregnancy, you must, but it's what you gain which is so important. If you eat poorly you'll find it soooo much harder to lose the weight after. Whereas if you eat healthily as much as you can then, in all likelihood, the majority of the weight will fall off before you're six weeks postpartum.
Lastly, there is no logic behind how much weight each pregnant woman gains. Some people get away with gaining virtually nothing and some gain 60 pounds without giving it a thought. There's little you can do to prevent weight gain as you must gain, just keep working out and eating healthily. That really IS the BEST thing you can do. Fitness and health should be your focus now, you almost might as well forget about the scales completely0 -
I think it just happens to some women. I'm sure the majority of women who post in the weight gain thread are women who don't gain much so are keen to show off, so don't be put off by that.
I haven't even weighed myself, because I know I'll have out on more than the recommended 25-35lbs. I'm nearly 36 weeks and have been exercising and logging throughout. I know I'm not overeating, and as well as all the exercise, I'm generally very active as I have 2 young kids already.
I lost weight after my other 2 kids, so I can do it again. I'm nowhere near as big as I was with my 2nd though as I didn't exercise with her, so at least there's that positive!
Some women retain a lot of fluid too.0 -
Yep, what everyone else said! I gain a lot, too. I eat well and exercise. I don't eat at a deficit, but I was a healthy weight to start.
With my first, I was a little overweight, quit smoking cold turkey (and drinking beer), ate huge quantities of things (even though they were healthy...like cups of almonds and 3-4oz of cheese. I gained close to 50lbs, had major swelling, high blood pressure, etc.
With my second, I started off slim, exercised throughout, ate lots of fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean proteins, etc...and still gained 45 lbs. No swelling though and I was very healthy. I was constantly stressed b/c I gained so much weight thinking I was doing everything right. I was able to lose it all within a year with exercise/diet/breastfeeding.
This time, I'm not going to stress out. I'm eating well and exercising. I'm already gained 11-13lbs in 13 weeks. I AM going to try to track and make sure I'm not eating way way way over , but I fully expect to gain at least 40lbs. Its not the end of the world as long as you and the baby are healthy. It just takes a little longer to lose, thats all! But since when is it a race?0 -

For what it's worth, that weight gain thread was started by a friend of mine who is well over six feet tall and gained a ton while she was pregnant, despite working out every day and watching what she ate. Some of the women who post in there aren't gaining much, I think I've posted once or twice.
I second the comment on retaining fluid, I have been really puffy for the past few weeks especially in the ankles and feet.
All you can do is try to eat mostly healthy foods when you're hungry - your body is going to do whatever it wants to do. Each of my pregnancies has been drastically different in terms of the weight gain and I don't even look at the scale when I go to the doctor because I feel good and that's what matters to me.
Scientifically for the most part, we put on the most maternal "fat" during the first and part of the second trimester. Mostly after week 20 or so the weight gain is fluid (we have like twice as much blood now!), placenta, baby, water retention, etc. Don't get discouraged, the weight does come off afterwards one way or another and the less you stress now, the better :-)0 -
Trust the process! Your body will gain what it needs! A 19 lb gain at 24 weeks sounds absolutely reasonable to me! With my first baby my weight was always 5-6 lbs behind my week (ie. like you I was up about 19 lbs at 24 weeks). I suddenly gained several pounds over 2 weeks going into my 3rd tri and then my weight gain was equal to my week (so 28 lbs at 28 weeks sort of thing). I kept gaining 1 lb a week after that and was convinced I was going to hit at least 40 lbs gained, but around week 35 or so my gain basically stopped and I ended my pregnancy up 36 lbs at 40w3d. Just focus on healthy eating and being active, and don't stress over the number on the scale. :flowerforyou:0

All I can say is it happens...and I don't know that there is any rhyme or reason to it.
I just checked my weight log and during the first tri, I gained 2 lbs. 2nd tri I gained 21 lbs, and 3rd tri I gained 3 lbs.
A colleague had her baby about 3 weeks after I had mine and she gained all her weight in the first half of pregnancy, and virtually none during the 2nd half.
We're 15 and 12 weeks post-partum now, and are both basically down to our pre-pregnancy weights. I gained 26, she gained around 45. Just made good decisions and trust yourself and your body.0 -

I agree, it sounds like reasonable weight gain. If your pre-pregnancy BMI was between 18.5 and 24.9 then you are slightly (like .8 lbs) above the recommended weight gain chart (assuming you were on track for a 35 lb.weight gain).0 -
I could have written this post (actually I've written one very similar!)
I gained 20lbs in 20 weeks by sometimes logging on MFP but in general trying to be good. After 20 weeks I got a little disgusted so started tracking 100% and upped my exercising, lowered my calories to 2,000 vs the 2,300 that MFP had set me at for maintenance. I am nearly 3 weeks into this new, more strict way of living and low and behold - I'm up 3 more pounds So I guess I am just going to gain hat I'm going to gain and can just do the best I can...
This is my 3rd by the way and I gained somewhere around 35lbs with my first two babies and that was eating terrible and not exercising hardly at all. I'm on track to gain MORE than that with a much healthier lifestyle. Oh well.0
