The running group I'm a part of is partnered with several doctors and exercise physiologists. One of them wrote (what I think is) a helpful article on strength training for long-distance runners/ endurance athletes. Here is the link:

This is basically the program I follow for strength training, except I don't do kettlebell swings and I use a bar for deadlifts instead of kettlebells. The author points out that it is important to start out using bodyweight only until form is perfected. The recommended exercises are as follows, and the article explains why each one is beneficial and how to perform it:
Lower Body:
-Squat
-Walking Lunge
-Dead Lift
Upper Body:
-Push-ups
-Pull-ups and chin-ups
-Horizontal Rows
Full Body:
- kettlebell swings
Feel free to comment and/or share what you do for strength training
