Vitamin D

Have you had your vitamin D checked?

Vitamin D is an extremely important nutrient and many people are deficient and don’t even know it! In our practice, well over 70% of people are deficient in this very important nutrient. Why? Because there are not a lot of great dietary sources of vitamin D, AND we live too far north for our body to make enough vitamin D during the winter months. In addition, dark skinned people synthesize less vitamin D than do light skinned people when exposed to the sun.

Vitamin D plays a role in calcium balance, weight loss, mood, cell differentiation, immunity, insulin secretion, and blood pressure regulation. A low level of vitamin D has also been linked to different types of cancers as well as many other diseases. Asking to have your vitamin D levels checked at your next check up is a great idea for everyone! Ask to have your 25(OH)D levels run and then begin supplementation if needed! The ideal vitamin D range for most people is between 40-70ng/mL.
One of my favorite products that we use in our practice is made by Designs for Health called “Emulsi-D3 Synergy” which includes vitamin K1 and K2. Each drop contains 2000IU of highly bioavailable vitamin D and vitamin K1 and K2.
