Hirsutism

OMG. All of this excess hair growth is driving me insane! The painful waxing and plucking of the hairs has got to come to an end. I had gotten the laser hair treatment when I was working and could afford it, and it seemed to work really well. Most of it was burnt off and the rest kind of fell out. What did grow back was thinner, lighter hair. I would love to get it again when I can afford it. Does anybody else have some hair removal tips that they like? What are your favorite products? Also, this is my first day on here, so I would love for yall to add me! There's always room in my life for encouraging friends and advice

Welllll, I don't necessarily have that problem with PCOS, I actually have the opposite. My hair is always falling out, and I can't regrow my eyebrows to reshape them to save my life!! Idk about brows, but I use Nair lotion for my legs and it seems to last much much longer then when I shave, and I like that I can slap it on, wait 5 minutes and use a cloth to wipe it off, and I know that all the hair is gone, AND it's great on days where I'm in a hurry and forgot to shave so I can use it while I finish getting ready. Hope you find an answer to your problem!!

Thank you for your comment! Sorry about your brows, I read somewhere that people can tattoo them on (permanent makeup) and they look like real brows, it's quite amazing to me. I've never used Nair before, I'm actually kind of scared because I have sensitive skin and eczema. Does it work well with tough hair? Also, my hair on my head is always falling out, I just wish it would everywhere else instead lol.

I'm constantly having hair come out of my head whenever i touch it! Growing up my mom would always yell not to play with my hair cuz she'd find strands all over the place and NOW we know why lol I'm pretty sure they make a version for people with sensitive skin. The time you leave it on is based on how tough your hair is. I've got fine hair so it doesn't take long. I only used it on my legs tho.

My doctor prescribed Spironolactone for me for the hirsutism. It's supposed to slow the hair growth, so I'm taking that and also getting laser hair removal. I constantly find awesome Groupons for laser hair removal, and that makes it MUCH more affordable, so I would recommend checking Groupon to see if you can find one near you, and maybe talk to your doctor about the Spironolactone to see if it would be good for you.

My Dr. gave me Spiro and it made me feel ill, and now I am on a low dose BC pill for the facial hair and acne. I've been for laser about 12 times I would say, maybe even more now that I think of it, and still have excessive growth. I ended up buying an epilator (I think thats what its called) and just keep on top of it. I won't and can't spend anymore money on laser!

I'm on Spiro too! Definitely has made a huge difference for me. Once I got my facial hair threaded off (Love it for my brows) and it made me break out so bad! Since being on Spiro my facial hair has gotten a lot better, though I have to pluck a bit every week. I also have a lot of hair on my arms and stomach, and it's gotten a lot lighter too. I'll have to try Nair for my legs ... I think I used Veet last I tried and it didn't really work well for me. Big patches didn't come off. Maybe it'll work better now that my hair isn't so coarse.

I've heard that N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC, and you can get it at a health food store or GNC) is good for hirsutism. I haven't seen much effect. I was on Spiro ages ago, and it worked, sort of, and I was getting electrolysis. I plan to go back to electrolysis once I can afford it (also thinking that might be my 20 pound weight loss gift to myself). I need to make sure that I find a good one, and use EMLA cream.

My sister used nair on her face....NEVER EVER DO THAT!! that said...i am following this because I want to know if that NoNo thing...or the Tria (home hair removal system) is worth the money. I am in the same boat as you. Hair on my face, but it falls out on my head....so annoying!

Thank you everybody for commenting! Y'all have given me hope! I now have a list of questions to ask my doctor. I'm glad that waxing isn't my only option anymore lol. I'm very interested in that Spiro stuff. Seems like the majority is having good results with it. Everyone's body is different though. But, I never know what works for me until I try it, so I'm gonna stop being scared of things and go for it! Hope everybody is doing well with their PCOS journey. It's a difficult thing to go through, but I'm really thankful that I don't have to go through it alone. It's nice to talk to people with the same thing, cuz nobody else will understand as much as somebody else who has it.

I am glad the spironolactone worked for so many people. It made me physically ill. I had diarhea for about 3 months straight and finally decided I couldn't handle it anymore and insisted on trying with no meds! So far it's been great, but the hirsutism isn't getting better yet.

I've been wondering about Tria or NoNo too.

Nair makes one specifically for the face, so does Oil of Olay.....and neither worked for me. My mustache actually just laughed at it, looking shinier and more luxurious than ever. My doc then put me on Spiro and I haven't had any side effects. I would recommend searching the forums on MFP for Spiro to find discussions. I nearly gave up taking mine until someone told me that it can sometimes take up to 6 months to start seeing results. Turned out that I needed about 2 months of diligently taking the med (I kept forgetting the second dose, or to take it at all) before I started seeing the tiniest of results.

My specialist just prescribed me Vaniqa cream. Pharmacy had to order it in, so I won't have it 'til Monday and it takes time to start working, so I can't say if it's effective or not. I'm considering laser to go along with it

I have terrible problems with hair. My face is out of control and it doesn't end there. I have been on Spiro in the past but from memory it takes a long time before you see any effects?? Once my acne came back I swapped over to the pill but I am super super bloated so wanting to change to a different one. Any suggestions??

I also agree that Laser/IPL is the way to go. I too did the whole Groupon/Scoopon thing and originally had IPL every month (top lip, underarms, full thighs, brazilian, snail trail) and now get it every few months. I still have to tweeze the other stray hairs on my face, or I sometimes use the nair facial hair removal cream. The IPL has made a HUGE difference!! I cannot recommend it enough!!!

The things us girls have to deal with!!

I use Nair on my stupid stache...also on the charming hair that I get on my lower stomach too....it does work and removes the hair and doesnt grow back for a couple of weeks. It doesnt grow back thicker or anything but, it does come back :(

Hair on my head wont stay in and I am shedding like a dog. Fun times!

Does the laser treatment work - how long before it grows back? Also, does it hurt as im a giant wuss :D

The excess hair growth drives me insane! In the past year, it has gotten pretty bad. It's embarrassing to let anyone get too close to my face, because I'm afraid that when I plucked, I missed a hair, or that one of my therapy clients might say something to me. My husband really is the best, I whine a complain all the time about the hair growth (mainly on and under my chin area) and he doesn't care. I sent him out to get some Nair for my face the other day and he did it. The box is now sitting on our bathroom counter. I am probably going to try it out tonight and see how it works. I do get some hair on my chest, but it's pretty minimal. I have some hair on my back, but it normally can keep it at bay with tweezing every once in awhile.

Having Hirsutism just makes me feel like less of a woman :-( My husband and I are trying to conceive and I am hoping to place my first order of Pregnitude in the next week or so. I am currently on Metformin daily. Metformin has been very good at regulating my periods so far. I'm just hoping that we are looking at the possibility of a baby in the next year or so. I have managed to lose around 15 lbs since our wedding in October, just by decreasing my portion sizes. I have a very hard time giving up the carbs though. I LOVE CARBS & POP! But I know that this is something that I need to do for us to have the best chance at having a baby. I probably won't give them up completely, but I know I just need to reign it in a lot.

Good luck you all of you! We can get through this!

I am currently on Sprintec, Spironolactone, and Metformin. The Metformin has definitely had the most effect, and it's also helping me lose weight by curbing my excessive hunger. All three medications are under $10 each, so I would definitely ask your doctor about them since they are so affordable relative to other types of meds.

I had laser hair removal done about 10 years ago and it worked quite well the first couple of years, but I couldn't afford at the time to keep up with the maintenance every 6 months since we were also trying to have a baby and spending a ton of money of fertility meds and IUI's. I was pleased with the inital results, but the hair slowly came back, but not everywhere I had it before, so I guess that's a plus. I then tried Spironolatone, but I was sick and my heart would race all the time, so I was put on Xanax for anxiety only to find out that one of the side effects of Spiro is feelings of anxiety/heart. Stopped that treatment, went on Ocello (Yaz) birth control pill along with using the Vaniqua cream 2x a day. The Vaniqa worked just like the instructions stated, visibly less hair growth in 24 weeks. Exactly 24 weeks after I started using it I had way less hair. I still have daily maintenance, but it takes no more than 5 minutes to pluck a few strays here and there. Once a month I do get my upper lip waxed when I get my eyebrows done. My upper lip is the only place that seems to not take to the cream or BCP, but I'm ok with that. I not longer have to shave/wax my whole face and my acne is gone. I haven't had a pimple since Sept. 2011. My insurance did not cover the cost of the Vaniqa, so I spend $130 on a tube that's for a 30 day supply, but it lasts me 6 months since my hair has decreased so much I can now use less at a time. Good luck and I hope you are able to try some of the suggestions on this thread and get some relief. I know what a pain in the butt it is to have to deal with this along with all the other PCOS issues.

Vaniqa has been out long enough that I would think that they would have a generic equivalent, yes? This hair thing is a PITA.

Really, they do need a generic because it's super expensive with insurance not covering any part of it. It's because it's consider a cosmetic or vanity medicine, so not a necessity, but a leisure item is how my insurance company put it.
