I am planning a trip to Manchester this October. I'm looking for any helpful information on lodging, and any other information on staying in the area. Food, restaurants and best way to travel in the area. I will be going back and forth to the velodrome.
There seems to be a number of you that are from the right country, just not too sure how close to Manchester. Hopefully someone has some good local knowledge. Any help is appreciated.

Unless it's for the Velodrome, and you've got to be there, don't go - it's a shlthole...0

 that's a bit harsh! They've spent a lot of money knocking everything down and building a newer, shinier ****hole.
@mat - you havent really given much of a clue what you're looking for. If its downtown accommodation with good access to restaurants, theatres, shops etc, then Salford Quays is quite nice. You could base yourself in one of the little Pennine villages on a train route, getting the benefit of beautiful countryside and fresh air, and still get into Manchester centre in around 20 minutes0 -
I'm just basing it on it being the only other place than Brixton where I managed to get mugged at knifepoint twice in a weekend. Oh, and getting my car broken into 3 times...
I also heard that the last time the UCI held the world cup there, the Columbians decided not to come, because they were worried about the number of drive-by shootings...
(I'm guessing he's there for the Worlds Masters Track Championships)0 -
Lovely sounding place....right on par with places in Los Angeles.
Yes, I'm planning on attending the World Master Track Championships. I was hoping to get insight into where best to stay, see if there are furnished apartments to rent (may not be a realistic option), best ways to get to and from the track, grocery stores or restaurants. I also want to source a trainer or set of rollers for use while there.
I know several guys that went last year and will pick their brains but never hurts to have additional information from people that know the area better than us tourists.
Any help is appreciated.0 -
The "Northern Quarter" is quite a trendy place to go, there's also the PrintWorks with lots of bars and eateries (and a big IMAX cinema, second biggest in the country). The Bierkeller is good for beer and burgers etc. Some fancy restaurants off Deansgate on the nicer roads such as King Street. Grill on the Alley, San Carlo...plenty of choice to eat and drink, depending on how upmarket or downmarket you wish to go - stuff to suit all tastes!!
Not sure on where to stay really as I live close enough to not need to stay over but the public transport from where I live isn't great so wouldn't recommend that end. Anywhere on a tramline would be good as you can get to Eastlands (velodrome) I think - not sure about rules of taking bikes on the Metro though.
PS. Piccadilly Gardens is a dump!0
