Neck cords

Okay, this is kind of a weird topic, but I ain't never seen nothing like this before...

I was doing the OHP with dumbbells today -- I'm at 27.5x2. I take it "easy" on OHP because a)female upper body and b)I've had surgery on both shoulders. So I'm sitting in the chair, staring in the mirror, and I do my warmups at 15. Fine. Then I do the 27.5s.

And the cords in my neck tighten up and bulge out. I could feel it happening.

I checked my breathing: normal. I checked my core: holding tight. I kept telling my throat "Relax, relax..." and boy, did those cords hold tight.

When I dropped the dumbbells I reached up and smoothed the cords out with my hand. My throat looked fine...until the next set.

I don't want to do OHPs any more if this is the result. Sorry, but I'm vain. I did 27,5s last time too, but this did not happen.

It's bad enough getting horrible changes to your neck with age, but does anyone know what happened???

You mean neck cords like this? resizedimage365178-neck-b4-and-after.png

Those are caused by clenching neck and jaw muscles.

Grin really big (no bigger) and then tense your lower jaw and neck. They should pop right up. Feel the muscles? Okay now relax them. Gone, right?

Now stick your lower jaw forward (no teeth touching) and pucker up for a silly kiss. 7451891-a-silly-crazy-man-wearing-a-clown-wig-with-rainbow-colors-pucking-his-lips-out-for-a-kiss.jpg Try and tense the muscles. Nothing! It's impossible to use your neck muscles in this pose.

So now you know what muscles to relax and a way to get those pesky cords to go away... happy lifting!

I don't understand. They stick out during your weightlifting but not afterward. What is the worry? You can't "build" non-muscle tissue.

Because it had never happened before.

Because to the best of my knowledge I wasn't doing anything to create them. (I wasn't clenching, I wasn't grimacing...)

They actually kind of hurt, like when you suddenly have a toe or finger that goes wonky and bends the wrong direction?

I would just watch for it in the future and if it hurts when you lift you may be doing something you aren't aware and have someone watch you...or have mirrors available.
