sugar cravings

Hi I was diagnosed with PCOS in Jan of this year. I'm on 1500 mg Metformin. I had put on 15 lbs since getting off of birth control in September 2012 and trying to conceive. (still trying...) I don't have the excess hair, but developed cystic acne, had irregular periods, low progesterone and the cysts.

Since I got the diagnosis I have largely cut out sugar and reduced carbs. I find that under 50 g of net carbs is best for me. Under 25 g net carbs seems to work even better but is harder to sustain. One thing I have noticed though is that if I fall off the wagon (like I did yesterday, sadly I succumb to some of the kids' Easter candy) or if I eat more carbs than normal, I have INTENSE sugar cravings. Like wake up in the middle of the night wanting to raid the fridge cravings. But if I keep carbs down this doesn't happen.

Has anyone else had this experience? Is it just part of the insulin resistance that goes with PCOS?

It's common with metabolic disorders in general (which usually have an insulin resistance component). Some people have higher thresholds than others, and you may or may not be able to increase your carbs again when you increase your insulin sensitivity (some can, some can't, the only way to find out is to cross that bridge when you get there).
