Perimenopause after WLS

Ladies,

Did anyone undergo VSG in their early 40s, lose the weight and then feel like they may be hitting perimenopause? I am a year out in 2 weeks, dropped about 145 lbs (well...I am up right now due to a crap load of water) and I think my cycle is getting sketchy.

I was regular prior to surgery and was quite regular after as well. The last two cycles have been crazy. Last month was a week late and light, this month I am still waiting. Unfortunately, my scale always rises the week or so before and it takes a couple days after for the water weight to drop off and then more weight.

This time the scale has jumped, I feel like crap, a chin full of acne, not sleeping, had the "sweats" one evening and it's been two weeks.

I figure 43 is a little early but perhaps the hormone flucuations with my weight loss brought things on? Anyone else and what are you doing? I have been googling perimenopause like crazy but just wondered if any other VSGers had the same experience.

Cheers,
Renee

I turned 50 a month after surgery. I had been like clockwork up until then, and even after for about 5 months. The 6 month I was about 3 weeks late. My gyn said that my being late was partially perimenopause, and partially due to losing a large amount of weight rapidly. Weight loss totally affects your hormone levels. So, it's possible your cycle is sketchy due to perimenopause but it's highly likely the weight loss has a lot to do with it.

I just had an appointment with my PCP today. We talked about the fact that my cycle has gotten really irregular over the last several months (I'm 10 months out and down 170 lbs overall, most since surgery). Anyway, she said it could be menopause, it could be hormonal fluctuations and wackiness due to weight loss, or it could be something like a fibroid or ovarian cyst. So now I have appointments set up for an ultrasound and further blood work just to start ruling stuff out. Oh I'm 48 btw and wasn't expecting menopause this early since my mom didn't hit menopause until 58 -- but you never know!

Thanks ladies for the reply and personal experiences! :-)

I do figure the weight loss has a lot to do with it but maybe I'm going to go early. Ugh...I don't mind but sheesh...all the pms symptoms and they just keep hanging on. This is getting in the way of the last few pounds I want to will off my body! I better go see my PCP and get things checked out.

This was one of the times when I wanted to call my mom and get "the scoop". Unfortunately I lost her to cancer in 2012. I do remember she went "early" at 48 but that was more to do with stress as odd as it sounds the day my father died (also cancer but at 49) she stopped her periods and never had another one. So...who knows what my body is going to do!

    I appreciate your time.

    Renee
