What's your Strategy?

Hi all, I'm not a big forum chatter (a bit shy), but nice to know I'm not the only person whose fondness of a drink is a stumbling block on the old diet bandwagon!
Thing is, I've been working so hard on getting my food right that I can sadly but fairly safely say that I really have boozed back on all the weight that I've (twice) successfully lost :-(
So I wanted to sense-check my approach and see if you guys have any pointers for me:
I've set MFP up with 5 "meals" a day: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Cheats/Snacks, and Booze ! That way I can easily see at a glance how much my boozing is affecting my (lack of) weight loss. I've been tracking this way for about a month and it's proven really insightful for me.
On the back of this, I've decided to allocate myself 1000 kcal for food and maximum 500kcal for alcohol each day. If I go over on one day, it has to come out of the next day's calories. And minimum 2 days a week I don't have a drink at all (often more, but I'm trying the 5:2 diet, so two days are "fast" days).
So far it seems to be working for me, but the only downside I can see with this approach is that it encourages me to drink spirits rather than wine or beer. Makes sense in terms of calories but I'm sure my liver isn't going to thank me for it!
Does anyone have any opinions on my approach, any advice?
