Ok so I remember this came up in another thread, (I've searched and can't find it again) and when I went to a support group the other day both ladies there said to start taking Biotin now. I go onto Amazon.com and there are like a million and one to choose from!

Can anyone recommend which Biotin I could start with now, I am PRE-OP. I am reading reviews and pretty much they all get good reviews I just don't know if I should take 1,000, 5,000 or 10,000 mcg???? Maybe a lower 'dose' now and higher POST Op?? Any help is greatly appreciated

go low - 1,000 mcg a day. You are preventing, not treating a problem. That's my opinion :)

I am one month out from surgery. I took biotin for years before my operation. I really like Nature's Bounty. I was taking anywhere from 5,000-10,000mcg. I have a follow up appointment tomorrow with my surgeon. I am hoping he says I can start taking it again.

Started 2,500 one month before surgery and have continued that dose since. No hair issues at all (7 months out) and if i do not clip them I can use nails to climb trees!

I did not take any before surgery but started 2000mcg after surgery and now take 5000mcg. I started losing my hair at 3 months and it is very thin now, you can see my scalp. at almost 6 months I feel it has slowed. but I really struggled to get more than 60 g of protein in a day and I have lost 83 lbs in 5 1/2 months. Most B vitamins wash out fairly fast so I doubt how much preloading will help. I really think hitting your protein goals will help the most. I lost a huge amount of hair while breastfeeding and it all grew back. I have much better protein intake now. I would still do it again in a heartbeat. I just wish I had had access to pure protein 30g protein shakes back then. Most of my buddies in support group grew all their hair back.

Biotin seems to help some, but not others. I have taken 5000 mg for 3 years now and my fingernails are still a mess (weak, ridges, splitting, etc.). I lost some hair at the 4-6 month post op. So, I'm not convinced that it really does any good, but I still take it.
