Third Sunday of Easter -- May 4

The Third Sunday of Easter points to the restatement of the basic truth of discovery. The two lessons—one in Acts and one in the epistle of St Peter—simplified the Good News of Christ’s sacrificial death and glorious resurrection for the mob (mostly Jews) that had participated in Jesus’ execution.
Peter’s power of persuasion brought them to the understanding that they made a mistake and their sorrow was palpable. Three thousand professed conversion. They recognized that they had been manipulated by leaders with their own agendas.
The New Testament Gospel lesson in Luke spoke to the doubt that the disciples had, after Mary Magdalene had rushed back from the empty tomb that Sunday morning. Several had run back to check it out for themselves, but they hadn’t met Jesus personally, so they suspected that something was amiss (or misunderstood by the women). They saw and empty tomb. The passage says they discussed among themselves what had happened, but they didn’t have a satisfactory explanation. They didn’t accept the word of the women.
No surprise there. Something defied common sense and logic. Rise from the dead? Who did that? They hadn’t remembered Christ’s cryptic words before his death that in three days he would rebuild the temple.
But if Twitter had been around, it would have been the trending topic. Two disciples on the Road to Emmaus spoke of it. Nonstop. Then a ‘stranger’ joined them.
It is significant that Jesus was not immediately recognizable to them—either by sight or by voice. After spending three years in close proximity, why wouldn’t they recognize him? God didn’t allow it. Christ made them not see him as he was. I’ve looked for keys and stared right at them, but missed them. Sometimes our brains don’t accept all the information. Selective seeing/hearing. God used that to blind them to the reality.
But when Christ asked what they were talking about, they responded like my children about me not knowing the latest Twitterverse trending topic, “Are you the only one, who doesn’t know?”
Jesus asked them to explain it further and they stopped to relate the events surrounding Christ’s life of profound teaching and how a specific group of Jewish leaders had turned him death and disappearance from the tomb. They even expressed their ‘lost’ hope that Jesus would have been ‘the One’ to ‘free Israel. But then this happened.’ In essence, their beliefs were not far from Judas’, who had betrayed Jesus and sold him for 30 pieces of silver.
They were dismissive of the women. They related that the ‘women said’…but they did not find. An angel said, but no one saw Jesus. Everything was ‘we thought, but.’ And the word, ‘but’ negated all the words before— the angels, the risen Jesus, and the women.
At that point, Jesus demonstrated his frustration with them, but still didn’t reveal himself.
““How foolish you are, how slow you are to believe everything the prophets said! 26 Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and then to enter his glory?” 27 And Jesus explained to them what was said about himself in all the Scriptures, beginning with the books of Moses and the writings of all the prophets.”
They didn’t reply with understanding or disbelief. They didn’t recognize his teaching style of knowledge and authority, that had set him apart throughout the Gospels. However, they remained quiet. Listening.
Even if we don’t understand and/or don’t fully believe, listening quietly provides an opportunity for God to teach us.
Jesus resorted to subterfuge. He pretended he was going on, but they pleaded with him to stay with them, since it was getting dark.
They didn’t recognize him until the moment of the breaking of bread—sitting down at a meal together—when Christ gave thanks. Jesus called upon God and the disciples were allowed to see him, followed by his disappearance.
Jesus appeared repeatedly for brief moments until there was recognition and then he disappeared. Jesus told Mary in the garden it was because he had not yet returned to the Father (John 20).
Jesus talked a great deal among the disciples, while they believed him to be a knowledgeable teacher on the road to Emmaus—they later claimed their hearts were burning because he was so authoritative on explaining the Scriptures—but when they recognized him, he didn’t stick around.
I suspect there would have been so many questions that were not important to be answered. Like children fixated on their questions that don’t address the real concerns, Jesus only taught simple truths. He didn’t explain exactly where he had been or the details of how he was able to rise again, or what was different about the resurrected body that enabled him to appear and disappear at will. So many questions, I know I would have been asking. All we know is that God raised him from the dead, as Peter said.
But the point was simple: Jesus was alive.
He arose and fulfilled the prophecy foretold in the Old Testament. As Peter told the Jews, Jesus arose to save people, who believed in him. The two disciples raced back to Jerusalem to share with the other disciples: Jesus has risen indeed.
Thanks be to God.

Daily Bible Verses to Memorize for Meditating

Psalm 118:24 King James Version (KJV)

24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Luke 24:13-35
King James Version (KJV)
13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.
17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?
18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
22 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;
23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.
24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.
25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.
29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.
30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

Prayer of Encouragement

Almighty God, you showed yourself in ways to the disciples so that they would believe without a shadow of a doubt. Blessed are people who believe without the benefits that the disciples had. Lord, we believe. Help our unbelief. We praise your name for the salvation we have received in Jesus name, Amen

Conclusion
The Third Sunday of the Season of Easter celebrates the truth: Jesus has risen and is alive. He died to save us from our sins. We have many examples now of the truth. Even the Jews that were part of the mob stirred up and manipulated to chant for Jesus’ death changed their hearts and 3,000 were added to the faith. The truth will surface. Enough witnesses shifted the awareness, that couldn’t be denied.
Jesus is alive. Jesus saves.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
