New Big Sur Entry Process

I'm curious what you all think about this - I was super grateful that I managed to get into the BSIM this year considering it sold out within 1 hour. I knew they were going to change their registration process for the 2015 BSIM and I'm actually pretty impressed with this solution - a series of first-come, first-served entry dates/times, followed by a lottery.

Four First-Come, First-Served Registration Periods, 625 Entries Available at Each

Tuesday, July 15, at 10 AM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT)
Saturday, July 19, at 11 AM PDT
Wednesday, July 23, at 5 PM PDT
Sunday, July 27, at 4 PM PDT

Lottery

Following the four first-come, first-served registration periods, we will begin a lottery for 500 entries.

We will accept lottery applications Tuesday, July 29 from 10 AM PDT through Wednesday, August 6, at 11:59 PM PDT.
All lottery applicants will pay a small, non-refundable lottery processing fee.
All lottery applicants will be notified of selection status on Monday morning, August 11.
Those selected will be automatically charged the $150 Marathon entry fee (plus online processing fees).

Not bad, but I'd rather see some spots available for people with qualifying times too.

I have registered for events using a similar procedure and it works pretty well. With only 4500 slots I'm not sure a qualification process would work. I like their charity option -- actually seems like quite a bargain compared to what you have to raise for other races.

And while Big Sur is spectacular, there are other equally scenic marathons that are easy to register for, so it's not like it would be the end of the world to not get in. Personally I rate it third among the marathons I have run (behind Boston and Crater Lake), and I expect it will drop to fourth after I complete Pike's Peak this summer.
