PCOS and Fertility

My husband and I have been (unsuccessfully) trying to get pregnant for a year. I know it's harder with PCOS, but it's not impossible. What worked for you? Please, share!

I have two children. The first time I conceived it took a year. My cycles were about six to eight weeks long. I started South Beach and got pregnant about a month later.
The second time, after I went off the pill, I had two normal periods and then stopped getting periods altogether. They were restarted with Metformin. I tried South Beach again during that time but got pretty sick and had to stop - I think it was the combination of low carb, exercising more heavily than I had the time before, and Metformin. All together, it took me about a year and a half that time.0 -
get on track now, don't let yourself wallow in self pity for years like I did. Loose the weight, get with a doctor and get on birth control or whatever medicine your doctor prescribes. I know some women take metformin for PCOS, but I don't. Best of luck to you! I have a cousin with PCOS with kids so it can happen. She has been pregnant 13 times, but has 4 kids that she loves dearly!
Personally its taken me 2+ years to get to a healthy BMI, it is harder for us but it can be done. My doctor approved me in April to try for a baby again, after already having 7 miscarries from not treating my health for many years. I'm going off my birth control in July after being on prenatal vitamins for 3 months, to prep my body for pregnancy. I am doing everything right this time so my doctor and I are pretty confident this will happen!0 -
For me, reading the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility and charting really helped. I charted to avoid for 13 months before we started TTC and it was so good to know how often I really was ovulating (4 times in that 13 months). My dr was very proactive and put me on Clomid (50mg) from the first cycle of TTC. Some may disagree with that decision but he was factoring in my PCOS and frequent anovulatory cycles and the fact that I have MS and had a limited window to TTC before I would need to get back on my MS drugs. I was very thankful to get pregnant on my second Clomid cycle.. I did end up with twins however. I also lost 20 lbs before we started TTC in hopes that would help, so i was able to start at a healthy weight.
I also had a surprise pregnancy (and miscarriage) last summer. While the m/c was awful, in a way it was good to know I was able to get pregnant without Clomid. If we TTC again, I'd really like to do it without Clomid. I might look into Femara instead if we don't get pg within the first several months (again, proactive b/c of the MS factor).0 -
Wanted to add - talk to your doctor because the risk of miscarriage is very high with PCOS (it is about 10-20% in the general population and 40-50% for women with PCOS). Metformin can reduce this to as low as 8%. (A study on this came out right before I got pregnant with my son, which is how I know the #s). I took Metformin through my first trimester with no issues.0

First off good luck on your journey and yes it is a journey!!!!!
I think we tried everything under the sun from positions, meds, tests, herbs, etc...
I took Clomid 100mg round one and got pregnant but miscarried at 7wks. (By this time it had taken us 3yrs of trying and I spent a few days in bed wallowing in pity.)
Next took a break and went to the beach was going to try again after the new year 2008. But found out I was pregnant at end of Dec. 2007. I ended up having a pre-term birth and my son only lived 3hrs before passing away. (I don't think this has to do with PCOS). I wasn't going to try again but low and behold I ended up pregnant with my daughter 2months later.(Rollercoaster ride!)
Anyways you have to do trial and error. What worked for some might not work for you. For instance I was informed that the clomid just jump started my body into doing what other's bodies already did.
Anyways after all this long journey I have a healthy and happy 5yr old and although I can't have anymore children (emergency hysterectomy) feel free to add me and you can ask me anything. :flowerforyou:0
