Rowing from the floor?

Hi!

Today was Day 1 for me with SL (I downloaded the SL iOS app and really liked its simplicity.)

I was reading this article on the SL site about form: http://stronglifts.com/how-to-master-barbell-row-technique/ and got to this part:

1. Row Each Rep From The Floor. Because you’ll never train your upper-back fully if you let the bar hang in the air. Barbell Row like you Deadlift: with the bar starting and returning to the floor on each rep. The barbell should be above the middle of your feet when you start Rowing, same stance as on Deadlifts."

My question for those of you who have experience is...is it ok to row from the floor if your barbell is loaded with a smaller diameter plate? I started off today at 65lb, which meant the bar + 2 ten-pound plates. It felt like I was starting too close to the floor and - in my paranoid imagination - I could see myself tweaking my lower back that way.

I guess my question goes for deadlifts too. If you don't have wide rubber training plates, and don't have anything to prop up the bar to a higher starting point, is there a greater risk of injury? And how do you get around this, while you're still working with smaller plates/lower weights?

Thanks in advance!

I take a couple of my 10 lbs weights and stack them, then put the bar on that. It brings it up a couple of inches because I don't have any big plates. I do this for DL's too.

As Llama said you will want to elevate the barbell by putting some plates or something similar under them. The barbell needs to be elevated to around 8.5". If the barbell isn't at the right height you risk rounding your back when performing the lift.

Cool. I'll definitely use extra plates to stack them. Thank you!
