Meditation
Tuesday, Easter Week Seven, aimed sights on the way that believers recover from the suffering and setbacks. Again, the Psalmist sang praises of God, the protector, and the leaders—Moses and Aaron, who gave and followed the laws, guiding the rest to obedience.
The Old Testament lesson continued the story of Aaron’s intervention for the faithless—some of the children of Israel had failed to obey and turned away from God. They brought disease into the community and began dying—14,700 died—before Aaron raced to intervene with a sacrifice to cover their sins.
“So Aaron offered the incense to remove their sin. 48 He stood between the dead and the living, and the sickness stopped there.”
Aaron’s actions opened the showers of blessing on the community of Hebrews, who were suffering for the sins of some.
In the New Testament, the suffering for being a Christian was pervasive. But the pragmatic St. Peter enumerated the ways that believers could find strength.
• Be self-controlled and alert, able to pray.
• Love one another earnestly, because love covers over many sins.
• Open your homes to each other without complaining.
• Be good managers of God's gifts,
• Use God’s gifts for the good of others.
• Preach God's messages;
• Serve with the strength from God,
• Give all praise to God through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs glory and power forever and ever.
• Amen—or So Be It. ( Trekkies would say, “Make it so. Number One.”)
Be alert and controlled so you can pray—part of that was being prepared to recognize what needs prayer and then stepping up to intervene to pray.
Love. Love continued to be the umbrella of God’s plan in this world. Love covered sins. Aaron’s action—he hurried to intervene and offer intercession for the sick and sinful. The love of God for us resulted in Christ being the sacrifice for our sins. Everything falls under that supreme intercession for us and it came because of Love. Love covered and continues to cover sins.
If one is alert, praying, self-controlled and loving, then it would be likely that hospitality—the opening of one’s home to the needy would arise naturally. But, complaining apparently would still arose—because people failed to be unconditionally loving. So Peter had to add it to the list of behaviors for believers to strive to do.
The next several issues Peter addressed dealt with the aspects of life in the advancement of spreading the Good News.
Preach God’s message (not one’s own—no self-aggrandizing).
Manage the gifts God gave and that meant using the gifts to benefit others (rather than just oneself).
Service to God did not come from our own strength and talent, but from the gifts of God.
As a result, ALL PRAISE GOES TO GOD. So many people draw attention to themselves and make ministry about personalities instead of God.
I struggled with naming my website, ChapLynne’s Chat, because it focused on my name rather than God, but it arose out of my 20 years military experience, where I was known as ChapLynne and I wanted them to be able to find me easily, if they wanted. But I hope I let people know that any good they receive comes from God at work in me and not because of any talent I have.
Our true power comes from God, the source of all love and creation. Recovering from illness, injury, challenges, tribulation and suffering relies on tapping into that Source. Just as Aaron intervened for the Jews, Christ intervened for all of us, that we might be healed at every level.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
9 Use hospitality one to another without grudging.

Prayer of Encouragement

Creator and Loving God, Our source of every good and perfect gift is you. We praise you for your work in our lives and ask for your intervention that we might be healed at every level from our suffering and illness or injury, that we might demonstrate your power in the world. In Jesus name. Amen

Conclusion
Tuesday, Easter Week Seven reminded the suffering believer of the ways that God can intervene to strengthen them. We gain our power to act from our self-controlled alertness, our ability to pray, our love for others, our open hospitality and reliance on the gifts of God to give us the strength to accomplish anything. All praise and glory goes to God. We get to be the recipients of that great power and love, so that we can do much in Jesus name.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
