Small upticks in weight

Hi all. Today I am 3 wks 1 day post-op. I lost pretty steadily once the water weight from the hospital went away, going from pre-surgery weight of 343 down to 319.8. Now, in the last few days, there's been a slight uptick every day. Today I weigh 322.2. So about 2.5 pounds in the last 3 days or so.

Is this normal? My intellectual half says the body is replacing the lost fat with fluid to keep itself steady and it will all flush out at once, not to worry, stay the course, blah blah. The emotional, pre-surgery mind is fighting the despair - 'That's it. There we go. I go through all this and get he surgery and I'm losing 20 pounds and nothing else. The most I can hope for now is no more gain. But no more weight loss. Oh gods of weight loss, why do you hate me?' And other dramatic self-talk.

I've put a clamp on it, but encouragement at this juncture would be most welcome. Thank you.

Make sure you are measuring and weighing your food and not grabbing bites here and there. 3 wks after surgery I stalled and started gaining. I went to my nutritionist. I was completely eyeballing my portions, my meals were lasting way over 30 min and I had slipped into grazing, I was drinking with my meals. By having my meals last 2 hours + I was eating more calories than I was supposed to. Grabbing bites of food here or there rapidly adds up to 300+ extra calories. She got me on MFP to log all my food and trained me to measure and weigh my food. I was eating 1000-1300 calories when I was supposed to be at 650 for the 1st month!! Also I wasn't getting my protein to 75+. Low protein causes severe stalls as well as wrecking your hair 3 months later. If you are doing everything correctly this will pass and it is likely water weight or constipation. Make sure you don't have 5 lbs of poo in you. This is very common. Just accept the process and you will do fine. Take an extra 20 min walk today to kick up your metabolism. Whatever you do don't get discouraged! Stalls and minor upticks are just part of the journey :)

Hang in there buddy- I had the same experience. I had my sleeve on 3/19/14 and started at a similar weight- 325. I lost about 3lbs a week for the first three weeks, and then saw a lot of fluctuation. Up and down a bit, and two different week+ stalls. It gets moving again- but I completely understand the frustration. There's a lot of body changes I wasn't prepared for- like the up and down in weight, the chills so bad that I had blue fingernails for a while, some acne that I never had before, crazy changes in my cycle and even some major mood swings. It's just a lot of change on your body.

It will even out though, you're doing it right (I had a big fear that I was messing it all up) and you will get used to how your body functions in terms of weight loss and digestion soon enough- I can promise you!

I also found that putting the scales away and only weighting once a week, helped me with all the what ifs ... what if I'm not going to loose more. what if I did something wrong. Follow your clinic recommendations and stay the course. Right now your body is going through big changes and your mind is going to play games with you. This to shall pass, it just seems like it won't. Good Luck and keep up the good work.

I don't have enough mental fortitude to weigh in only once a week. It seems the times I've tried to do that I gain weight. My weight is like a living creature and a moment's inattention is enough for it to run roughshod over my hips. I don't think I'll ever lose that constant free-floating anxiety. I'm so determined with this surgery to finally succeed, to go all the way down to my ideal weight. I keep telling myself, 'It is IMPOSSIBLE to gain weight on 500 calories a day.' And good calories, protein, veg, fruit, not bread, not sugar.

    Yes, I weigh and measure.

downtick today. Let's hope it continues. Sorry if this is TMI for the gentlemen - I had a hysterectomy about 5 years ago but they left the ovaries. I'm 55 and I'd presume I'm in menopause by now, but sometimes I wonder because I do get times when I seem to hold onto water and weight for a few days. I'm going to use my weight chart here to see if that happens once a month. I'm from a family of females who took a long time to get through menopause, so I suppose that's still a possibility for me.

My weight does goofy things, too. And when I do not lose for awhile, I start getting anxious-- so I feel you. At the same time, I keep reminding myself I need to eat this way FOR LIFE--- protein first, veggies, exercise, plenty of fluids, etc. I had this surgery not just for weight loss, but because I was on all kinds of meds and wanted to be able to have a healthier life. Sometimes when I have this chat with myself it works out. Sometimes it does not. :) Still, it is the truth. I had a VSG for leverage--- just that little boost I need so that I am not ravenous and can mind my portions. That little edge I need to be able to say "no thanks" to junk. I knew it was not going to be a miracle, and i knew it was going to mean changes for life. As that is the case, I can hopefully relax... follow my NUT's guidelines and live my life. Best of luck to you. :)
