Meditation
Thursday, Pentecost Week, began the countdown to Pentecost and dealt with the ways that God encounters us. The Psalmist reminded the Israelites how God’s eye was watching those that feared him and how safe they were under that scrutiny. Much akin to a parent watching over a child, who plays in complete absorption, unafraid of all surrounding that could be dangerous.
The Old Testament lesson in Exodus tracked the way that God interacted with the children of Israel. God proclaimed that all would be able to ‘hear’ the Voice of God in the cloud over the mountain in the Sinai Desert. They would hear the voice and therefore, be able to always put their trust in God. Sort of an audible ‘warm fuzzy’ file.
In the Navy, I kept a file folder of any ‘warm words’ and ‘reminders of good’ that someone gave me—be it on a post-it-note or a card, or a photo. I would write a note to myself describing a seemingly miraculous response to a prayer. On a bad day, I would open my file and re-read them all, so I would feel the ‘warmth’ and ‘fuzziness’ again, and it would boost my belief.
For Israel, God’s voice would be heard by all, so that they would trust always and have their own ‘warm fuzzy’ feeling.
The New Testament lesson spoke of the way God’s spirit rested on believers and transformed their mouths to speak to strangers in their own languages. I am saving that lesson for Pentecost Sunday, but I mentioned it because it was consistent with the others: all the lessons dealt with how God encounters the believer.
And all encounters were tangible and recognizable so to give people a reason to believe, to trust and find that certainty that a child feels in the presence of a parent watching over them.
We can go confidently into the world knowing that God’s eye is on us, observing “all the inhabitants of the earth.” Psalm 33 When my mother was alive, I would be working as a chaplain, and catch her eye, in a room of families of military members. A twinkle and a smile would uplift me. I knew without asking that she prayed for me and my service to God, and I attribute much of my success to her consistent prayer for me. She helped me ‘hear the voice of God’ and my trust in God increased.
Again, the bottom line is God speaks. We listen and act upon what we hear. When we obey the Voice of God, when we follow the Word of the Lord, we will find success and blessing.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Exodus 19:1-9
King James Version (KJV)
19 In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai.
2 For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount.
3 And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;
4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.
5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him.
8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD.
9 And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD.

Prayer of Encouragement

Dear God, help us to hear your voice and be clear on what you have to say to us. Help us to love and follow you, in all that we do and say. In Jesus name, Amen

Conclusion
Thursday, Pentecost Week brought God’s voice into the foreground. Hear, O Israel, the Word of the Lord. We are called to listen for God’s communication with us, so that we will become confident and trusting of God. We have learned over and over again how God was faithful to the promises made to Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Rachel and through Christ’s promises to all believers. We must work to be in hearing distance.
My sister would wander some times as a tot. My mother would call her but if she had moved out of hearing distance, she wouldn’t respond. …and would say later, “But I didn’t hear you call.” We must avoid the excuses of “not hearing the call” and listen closely to the Voice of God (we have it easier in the Holy Bible.) Hearing the Voice of God increases belief and trust.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
