Meditation
Friday, Pentecost Week, advanced the understanding of encountering God. The Psalmist celebrated the relationship between God, the Creator, and the chosen people, who were never without God’s watchful eye, like a parent. And like a good parent, God allowed people to enjoy the freedom to choose and make their own mistakes or worthy choices. However, when needed and called on, God will intervene and protect.
The Old Testament lesson in Exodus reiterated the holiness of God and the restrictions in the encounter. People were not to look up into the fire and smoke, but stand behind a line of protection, lest they die or be punished. It made me think of the jet blast deflectors on the US Navy carriers. The heat of the engines of jet aircraft could burn and blow a person off their feet. God descended on Mt. Sinai in fire and smoke, with the sound of thunder. I could visualize that energy working like a laser or jet blast, which could damage people in the vicinity, who didn’t know where or how to walk.
When I, as chaplain, first walked on the flight deck, during operations, I hung close behind one of the supervisors, never walking out of range, lest I inadvertently walk into a danger zone and be injured. Moses was called up into the fire, but he was prepared for that holy encounter. He was tuned into God’s words like someone having an earpiece could take instructions from a director. We would learn that Moses’s encounter with God transformed him into reflecting the brilliance of holiness, which we call the Shekinah, meaning ‘he caused to dwell,’ glory. The Shekinah rested in a cloud on the mercy seat between the Cherubim in the Holy of Holies of the Tabernacle, when God spoke to Moses.
God encountered believers.
The New Testament lesson in the Epistle of Romans revealed the reality of the change in encountering God. No more was there distance between God and believers. True children of God are those, who allow the Spirit of God to lead them. That means I am not a Christian because my dad was a preacher and my mom, a missionary; or that I was raised in a Christian home. All those aspects helped me want to be a Christian but they did not make it so. My true relationship with God started the moment I chose to have God in my heart. I professed God as head of my life. I became ‘adopted’ into the family of God.
Adoption is pretty awesome. We adopted two into our family and they became our heirs. They took our name and now they have the right to all our worldly goods.
When we ask Jesus to be our Savior, we become heirs alongside of Jesus—joint heirs—to the Kingdom of God. And we get to access God like a child accesses a daddy. The famous photo of four year old John-John Kennedy playing under the desk of President Kennedy told the world that although heads of state and people in government and around the country may have to wait for an appointment with the President, a child had unfettered access to a daddy. The word ‘Abba’ was the familiar term for a child to address a father—just like the familial ‘Daddy.’ When we become children of God by choosing to follow Jesus, we gain that access and the right to call God, ‘Daddy.’
There were consequences to that right. Christ suffered from people, who hated him and God’s truths. We will encounter those kind of people, too, and may suffer for Christ’s sake. But in the end, our suffering will be matched in that we will receive the glory, too.
Think of any sport event where the champion players parade in their sweat, smudges of dirt and injuries, holding a trophy high, with grins wreathing faces and the winners basking in the glory. All the suffering to get there, lost in the moment of glory.
We may experience suffering. We will receive the glory alongside the Son of God.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

Conclusion
Friday, Pentecost Week celebrated the close relationship of the family of God. From the Old Testament Children of Israel, invited to the base of Mt. Sinai, where God spoke to Moses and delivered the Ten Commandments, to the New Testament Epistle to the church in Rome, where Paul reminded believers that they would experience misery just as Christ suffered, but there would be glory for Jesus and those who endured anguish with him.
The chance to be able to call God, ‘Abba’ or ‘Daddy’ made all the difference. We were given entrée to God in a new way. The Children of Israel gathered at the base of Mt. Sinai gaining access to God; we have become the John-Johns playing at the feet of our Daddy.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
