Just for funsies...

I've been messing with my food journal to find out what I would weigh in 5 weeks if I ate at an extreme calorie range. Here are the results of my experiment:

If I ate 15,000 calories everyday, I would gain 130 pounds in 5 weeks.

If I ate 5 calories everyday, I would lose 25 pounds in 5 weeks. (Actually I think the result should say that you would be dead in 5 weeks.)

Not sure why I found this interesting--maybe I'm bored or just strange! Either way, thanks for humoring me!

15,000 calories! Dear lord. Not even on my worst day did I ever come close to that. That's roughly 16 bacon ultimate cheeseburgers from Jack In The Box or 5.3 per meal if we were being sensible.

I keep a running spreadsheet that i put my net calories in each day and it does the math to tell me how much I am projected to have lost, what my current projected weight is, how many pounds I can loose in 5 weeks and the resulting weight as well as my current weight loss percentage. I also know that if I keep eating as I am now and can maintain the degree of weight loss, that I am 294.85 days away from my goal weight, or 454,346 calories in deficit till my goal weight. I find comfort in the numbers, it's my virtual scale thats not as mean as the real one.

Good luck on the 5 calorie diet, where would you like the flowers sent?

    Yikes!

My worst ever day recorded was on my 1st and it was 3,500 calories and this was a pretty typical day!

That spreadsheet sounds amazing :) I'm not talented with that type of thing but I do like to see the reports on MFP for Calories per day - especially when i've had a good week!

that made me laugh! and almost cry. So easy to put on but so hard to take off! I mean cripes...5 calories a day and you ONLY lose 25lbs??? That's just wrong!!! ;)

I just looked at a meal i would sometimes have on bad days before I started this journey, and the total came to 3,070 cal! That was just a meal, dear god. I can't ever let myself go back to that.

I have never recorded a typical day or normal day for me because they were all over the place so I would have no idea. I just assumed on my nightly binge days where I ate fast food with my husband, I could easily reach 5000 calories. I mean how the hell else do you put on 100lbs in a year or 60 in 6 months?

I don't pay too much attention to in 5 weeks you will weigh.. because I never do!! I am sure it is going down, it has to be, but it always seems the same to me.

I don't get it. He still has it once, sometimes twice a day and maintains and I a definitely more active then him. He has same job as me and goes home and sits behind his home computer until bed time. Only chores he does is mow the lawn once every other week. He weighs less too.

    Absolutely! Spread sheet please. melissad83@yahoo.com

I still have trouble with binges and not sure how to kick them but I just try to do better after them. Fast food and BROWNIES are my evil stalker.

Here is a link to the spreadsheet: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10021197/Weight Loss.xlsx

To use the spreadsheet you will need to fill in the yellow highlighted cells.

Start with your BMR calories, then your daily calorie deficit (for example my BMR is 2920 and my deficit is 1000 cal). Then add your starting weight or your weight since your last weigh in. If your not going to fill in for past dates then just use your weight since last weigh in. Then add your goal weight.

Because the spreadsheet calculation is based on your daily calorie goal, you will need to use a new sheet each time your daily calorie goal changes. If you have multiple sheets then you will need to put in the combined total calorie deficit number from the previous sheets in the 'previous calorie deficit count cell.'

@RatPat13 How far back do you recommend we key for initially starting? Also, I'm still on the old version of Excel, so it said there was some conditional formatting and such that was lost. I know how to use conditional formatting, if you want to fill me in on what you might have done. I haven't bumped around yet to see how or where the changes might be, so I'll let you know if I encounter any difficulties, but I'm so very excited to try this out!! Thanks SO MUCH for sharing.

Thanks for this RatPat...I have downloaded and now just need to read the definition of BMR and calorie deficit...! Once I read about those, I will be able to use this very useful tool!!!

THANK YOU!!! I just googled and figured it out and my spreadsheet is up and running. Says I will reach goal in a reasonable amount of time!!!!! Yeah!!! This has been a long journey! Yeah!! This has given me the KICK IN THE BUTT i needed to get movin'!!! I found the tunnel...now a weeeee bit of light is shinning thru it!!! Many thanks RatPat!!

If anyone needs help finding their BMR that Myfitnesspal has set for you, you can find it under your goals section under home. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/account/my_goals

Unless you want to go back to the beginning (i used the chart section of my fitnesspal to do that), I would just start from where you are now. The "how many days till goal" section might not be as accurate in that case so you might just want to skip it especially if your calorie goal has changed a few times.

The conditional formatting can be ignored. All it did was highlight the calorie deficit section red if it was bellow your calorie deficit goal. So if its less then 1000 for me it highlights red.

I went ahead and did my net calories back through May 1st, I think. Good to know the conditional formatting thing wasn't too critical. I know it can definitely be. :) Although, I have to wonder how accurate this is...because it says that getting to my goal weight is actually possible in less than a year. I don't think that that's accurate at all...Recommendations?

The thing to remember about going back and logging old net calories is the calorie deficit calculation is based on your BMR which can change, each time you log your weight MFP changes your BMR. So calculating old calorie deficits using your current BMR would underestimate the number of calories you have lost.

    For example:

On 4/4/2014, I at 1686 calories. My BMR at that time was 3080. If I subtract those then my calorie defect for that day was 1394cal.
My BMR now is 2870. If i use my current BMR to calculate the calorie defect for 5/29/2014 (2870-1686) the calorie deficit comes out as 1184cal.

Though that problem doesn't solve the issue with the possible end date. For a potentially more accurate date I would see what it says with just your most recent numbers. Remember that the way it calculates the possible end date (assuming you put in all the information correctly), is based on the average of how many calories you are loosing each day right now. As if you could repeat the last week or month forever till that end date. Over time the finish date should go up, as your daily calorie deficit goes down and as you loose weight more slowly. So if its calculating correctly then its more an aspirational number, meant to motivate and let you know if things have slow down.

Mine right now says I will be at my goal weight of 170 by 4/2/2015 (god that would be lovely) but that assumes I can keep loosing the average 2-4 pounds a week (based my my average calorie deficit of roughly 1500 a day). I wont be able to maintain that up for the next 10 months.

I could probably make the date calculation better but I would need to chart actual weight loss and calculate how that rate changes and build the slowdown into the date calculation.

I'm happy to double check your spreadsheet if you want. my email is patrick.boehner@gmail.com

I could also make the end date estimation a bit more realistic if I didn't base it on your average calorie defect and instead based on the calorie deficit of the day before or the last few days. That would give a slightly more realistic idea of the date based on how you are maintaing a deficit now instead of over your entire journey. But the date would swing wildly.

If I do that, instead of my end dat being 4/2/15, my end date becomes 6/28/15

But remember if you could continue to loose 2 pounds a week for a year you would loose 104 pounds.

If you want to know how the calculation works. let me know if anyone sees an issue with my math.

My start weight was 328, my goal weight is 170. 328-170= 158. I have 158 pounds to loose.
One pounds of fat = 3500 (alternatively 3555) calories. To get to my goal weight I need to have lost 158*3555 = 561,690 calories.
In the past 73 days I have lost 125,840 calories. That means I still have 561,690-125,840 = 435,850 calories.
On average, my calorie deficit over the past 30 days has been 1,540.93 calories.
If i divide the number of calories I still have to lose (435,850) by my average calorie deficit each day. I have the number of days before I reach my loss. 435,850/1,540.93 = 282.85 days to loose all those calories and reach my goal weight.
Add 282.85 to todays date and you get the end date.

All that makes sense to me. I followed that pretty easily... But, like you said, we can't maintain such dramatic weight loss over time, and as we lose more and more, the weight becomes harder to get rid of. Wow, this has me spinning all kinds of numbers in my head. I have been atrocious at tracking the last few weeks because we've been so broke I can either pay attention or buy ramen noodles (not really, but you get the drift). So I don't have too much data to update... But, when I think about it, I will email it back to you just for giggles!

And yes, my calories bumped down 5-6 times since February, so maybe once every 2-3 weeks? Fun.

    Thanks, Carly
