Meditation
Thursday, Trinity Week, shifted the focus to the essence of God and compared the identity of God with humanity. The Psalmist proclaimed the ‘majestic name’ of God in all the earth and enumerated the Creator’s highest standing and expressed surprise at how God remained interested in the insignificant people of earth. Who are we that God would care so much for us? God made us almost like gods, but a little lower than the angels, when we were given dominion over the earth.
Our creative force resembles the Divine image. We enjoy being productive and stoking our imaginations. Every scientific progress, engineering marvel, space exploration and technological advance excites us. We are “like” God in that, as Genesis 1:28 says, we are made in the Divine image.
The Old Testament lesson, however, revealed human impudence in God’s response to Job’s cry that things weren’t equitable.
I couldn’t help but visualize a two year olds’ tantrum, crying “But that’s not fair.”
God expected more of Job and questioned him about his knowledge of the heavens and creation. “Where were you when…?” became the redundant phrase. Simply compare humans to God and clarity ensued.
God’s power directed the galaxies and the stars into their positions. God’s force pushed the waters aside for dry land to appear and held waters back, so the cycles of rain and evaporation would ensue to be profitable so human life could flourish on this earth. Job got the message. Despite his high opinion of himself, Job realized his position was paltry compared to God.
The New Testament lesson in Timothy revealed that the latter was ashamed to talk about Paul’s incarceration. “Don’t be ashamed of me…,” Paul said. “I am doing what is right for God’s sake, and the One I believe in will protect me and keep me on track until the final day of Christ’s return.
Paul acknowledged there will be suffering. The protection of God didn’t eliminate suffering or pain; it equipped the recipient to function and survive, with a feeling of the peace of God in what they were doing. There was humility in Paul’s words. He didn’t tell Timothy to be arrogant, like Job had been, but Paul specifically said, ‘we act and are successful—not according to our works, but because God works through us.’ God’s grace allowed Paul to succeed.
So, as Christian leaders, we must avoid the cockiness of taking credit for what God does through us.
God’s power.
We are empowered to do things, because of the power of God.
God’s strength.
We are emboldened to advance the Good News because God gives us strength.
Everything will fall into God’s purpose. I struggle with planning an itinerary with all the conflicts of work, people and time. How God’s power hurled the world into its orbit, set the sun moon and stars on their courses, held back the power of seas and protected humans from further damage is beyond my comprehension.
Our lesson to learn deals with the Trinity:
God remains so far above our comprehension as to be infinitely unfathomable.
God cares so much for us that he works things for our benefit, including giving his only begotten Son to die for our sins.
God’s Spirit empowers us in our trials and temptations, so that we succeed through God’s grace.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

2 Timothy 1:8-12
King James Version (KJV)
8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Conclusion
Thursday, Trinity Week accredited God with infinite power and grace from the Old Testament lesson with Job, discovering his place in the scheme of things, to the Psalmist acknowledgement of the majestic greatness of God’s name in all the earth, to the working of God in our humble circumstances, be it in prison or free. God loved this world so much that Jesus—the only begotten Son—was given to ransom our lives. Through God’s grace we achieve anything that is accomplished.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
