Meditation
Saturday, Trinity Week, looked forward to the celebration of Trinity Sunday, pointing out the aspects of God—the different persons we know within the Trinity. The Psalmist sang eloquently on the majesty and greatness of God, the Creator, who shaped all things and directed the heavens and earth. Humans were relegated to our small place—after all, with God’s greatness, why bother with the insignificant details of humankind and the beasts of earth?
The Old Testament lesson in Job hammered home the nature of who God was. Job had believed he didn’t deserve such terrible things to happen and he was worthy of controlling his destiny. God pounded him with question after question—Can you order the stars? Guide the wind? Create light? Direct light?
It made me think of the old joke of God and Satan talking about the creation of man, so they had a competition. God worked with the oceans and dirt to create a man. So it was Satan’s turn, and he grabbed some mud, and God said, “Get your own dirt.”
The constant work of God in the universe is staggering. No wonder St. Augustine talked about the nine levels of angels, specifying the divisions of labor: some of whom were given dominion over aspects of space, planets, winds-water-earth-fire, and nations, etc.
We have failed to remember how magnificent God truly is. One of the reasons I have been passionate about science was that the more incredible and complex the discovery, the more it adds to the magnitude of who God is for me. The Psalmist got it right. What are we that you are mindful—that you care so much—about us?
Trinity Week was established to bring our attention on the aspects of God. We couldn’t really talk about the Creator without talking of Jesus. Jesus was the Word of God and without him nothing was made that was made. John 1 told us that. The second person of Godhead is Jesus.
The New Testament lesson drew our observation to the Holy Spirit. In John, Jesus told the disciples, and hence, all of us, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Back to the essence of Jesus—LOVE. Everything he taught came under the umbrella of love. Now our receiving the Holy Spirit became dependent on love and the Spirit would dwell with and in us.
My late mother was a loving person. Her face radiated welcome and care to all. In her last week of life, she was hospitalized, paralyzed on her left side and little function on her right. She lost the ability to talk. Her eyes were the only semblance of her spirit of vibrant life. I brought her tapestry carry case with her Bible, so she could see it on her table. A gift from her husband the Bible had been the source of her strength for over 60 years.
A nurse came in to check on her vitals, turned to me and said, “She’s a Christian, isn’t she?”
“Yes,” I couldn’t help but be curious how she recognized it.
“I can always tell. I’m an atheist but I can tell the Christians by their eyes.”
I knew exactly what she meant. My mother’s eyes glowed with the peace and love of God. Everyone, who encountered her, recognized it. For many, it was the only love they remembered having in their lives.
If we love God, the Holy Spirit which comes from the love of the Son and the Father, will transform us into glowing representatives, too. That is the message of the lesson of Trinity week. Love God. Jesus the Son will ask for the Spirit to dwell within us, and we receive the Spirit of God to make over our lives.
Thanks be to God.¬¬

Prayer of Encouragement

Dear God, in Trinity Week, we give thanks that you loved us enough to set the universe in motion. We praise your name for Jesus’ atonement and demonstrating love for us, so that we can love you, too. We ask for the Holy Spirit to be in us that we might bring peace and love to all we encounter. In Jesus name, Amen

Conclusion
Saturday, Trinity Week reminded us of the magnitude of God and we should never take that greatness for granted. Every aspect of our world and life came from God’s love for us. In turn, we must love God and do what we are asked to do. Jesus asked for the spirit to come on us and we receive the power of the Holy Spirit to dwell with us and within us. That can change everything in our lives for the better.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
