Few questions from a newb to SL

Hi everyone.

After reading so many raves on MFP about SL, I decided to give it a try. I will be on my 3rd workout tomorrow, so A again. First, I am so freaking sore today! Now for the questions:

I started at the weights recommended on the SL site. I am using the plain 45 lb bar to squat, and I did 65 lbs deadlift, and 30lb. overhead press. However, the gym doesn't have 2.5 pound weights to add to each side of the bar, so that would mean I would have to use the 5 pound weights, for a total addition of 10 lbs. I'm not sure I can physically handle this. If it is too heavy, do I switch to a different weight in the middle of a set, or do I just do as many as I can in each set and change weights at the next workout? Also, would you add the 10, or have any recommendations on what to do for that?

My other question- I have a lot of weight to lose...around 120 lbs. I know the scale won't show losses for a while since I just started lifting in conjunction with running, but at a certain point, the weight will start to fall off, right???? Of couse I am eating at a deficit and running as well since i am training for a half marathon.

You can find your own fractional plates online and bring them with you to the gym.
I got ones less than 2.5lbs for OHP so I could actually progress on those so I'm positive you can get 2.5# plates - if you get a black set, I'd mention it to your gym that you have purchased your own plates so they don't think you're smuggling out plates. I'd write your name on them and keep them in a bag to carry in/out of the gym.

And yes, you'll still lose weight with this.
You might not for a few weeks due to water retention but then again, you might since you've got so much to lose.

    Also, welcome!

Yes get your own weights! 2.5 pound plates were not sold in my fractional set so you may have to get those seperately. It's worth the money for sure to get a pair of 2.5 and a set of fractionals. I have pretty great upper body strength for a woman and I still really need fractionals or at least 2.5ers to progress on my OHP.

If you live in a larger metropolitan area you probably have a store specializing in weightlifting and it's worth it to find it and go there. You save on shipping and support a local wl resource.

I am starting to train for a half marathon too! Good luck to you!

+3 for fractionals and own set of 2.5lbs. Just make sure they can fit an olympic bar, since you are using the 45lb bar. I know places like ****'s don't sell olympic plates -_-

ETA: dumb mfp, I wrote D!ck's, as in the sporting goods store.

So you guys are saying there are fractional weight that are less than 2.5lbs? Like 1.25lbs?
That sounds like a great investment.

I got mine from Christians Fitness Factory I believe (my fractionals or pull up bands came from there).

    Its 4 sets: 1.25# 0.75# 0.5# & 0.25# I believe.
    Kinda spendy.
You can make your own fractionals getting washers from a hardware store - make sure the hole in the middle is 2in tho so it fits on your bar.

You can purchase fractionals...or weighted collars...or go cheap and get industrial washers/magnets...

I have 3.5lb weighted colloars (2 collars together weigh 3.5lbs) and use those for my upper body workouts and 2.5lb plates for squats and may start using them for my DL's as I am finding going up 10lbs is harder at the higher weights.

As for the weight yes it will come off. I have to assume you are at a deficit for 2lbs a week? If so as soon as the water/glycogen stores are gone from the new exercise you will see the weigh fall off as long as you are in your deficit. I was at TDEE-15% through most of my lifting andI lost on average 3/4lb a week...which is exactly what I was suppose to lose.

Only suggestion is to take measumrents and pick a time frame (I use 10 weeks) and take the same measurments and pics to for comparison because sometimes the scale weight isn't moving but you are losing inches.

For example in 10months of lifting I have lost a total of 10 inches...
